Now this might not be as exciting as many want it to be, but I don't expect either Mike Holmgren or Wade Phillips to change jobs before next season. Now let's take a look at each coach and what could happen:
Wade Phillips
Wade Phillips came into Dallas to coach a team with a lot of talent. Because of this many are saying that his coaching job wasn't as good as the record indicates, since most of the pieces were there already. To this I say, if the pieces were there, why hasn't the team performed this well?
The answer is that Phillips gave the Cowboys the right mix of discipline and freedom. Many complained the Bill Parcells was too tough and uncaring. Phillips was tough where he needed to be, but he was also a friend where he needed to be, and this allowed a highly emotional team like the Cowboys to reach higher into their potential.
What might happen in Dallas? There is some speculation that the Cowboys could fire Phillips and promote offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. They could do this for 2 reasons. 1) Garrett is one of the hottest head coaching candidates in the league and the Cowboys do not want to lose him and 2) they want to find a scapegoat for their playoff collapse (and not Tony Romo).
I don't see the Cowboys doing that this season. What I see them doing is paying Garrett whatever amount of money he wants to stay in Dallas, and offering him the head coaching job once Phillips leaves the position. I don't expect to see a coaching change in Dallas this offseason, unless you count Tony Sparano leaving for Miami.
Mike Holmgren
Mike Holmgren is one of the great coaches in the NFL, but many are wondering if his time in the Pacific Northwest might be coming to an end. I also don't see this one happening.
The Seahawks fans were disappointed with Holmgren and the Seahawks at the beginning of the season, but since then the team has played better, and the fans have been happier with the job Holmgren has been doing.
Seahawks fans need to face some facts. The Seahawks have won their division for the past few years and they have made the playoffs and even gone to a Super Bowl. I know 'Hawks fans want to see their team win the Super Bowl, but I think some teams in Miami, San Francisco and Atlanta would kill to have had their recent track record.
Holmgren will not be fired and he will not resign. I see the 'Hawks signing him for at least another season, but I do not see Holmgren returning to the general managers position that he has held. The Seahawks are a good football team and Holmgren is a good coach, no need to go blowing things up right now.
