Enlist these shopping strategies to come in on (or under) budget:
First look for direct sellers. The fewer middlemen, the more savings passed on to you.
Put together your own furniture. If you only have $1000 to spend on a room, Euraway offers affordable contemporary pieces that are ready-to assemble.
Purchase a set. The Roomstore's Chris Moncrief shares that complete room packages mean additional savings. Buy purchasing a seven-piece living room - including a sofa, loveseat, two end tables, and a coffee table - you can get a great deal.
Shop for specials. Thousands of items go on sale in the 22 stores that make up the North Dallas Design District the first Saturday of every month.
Become a preferred buyer. For only $25.00, you can purchase a Preferred Buyer Card which entitles you to great discounts at all of the North Dallas Design District stores. Using the card, you'll receive 10 to 40% off purchases from merchants like Cantoni, Freedom Furniture and Design, The Rug Gallery, and Freed's Homefurnishings. Other merchants, including Danish Inspirations and The Leather Sofa Company, cover your sales tax. Southwest Gallery offers six months with no interest or free home delivery.
Ask for help. After you've had a chance to browse and get inspired, take advantage of the staff's expertise. Don't be self-conscious about sharing your budget with a professional. When they know how much you have to work with, a home furnishings consultant can apprise you of all of your options. Their knowledge can help you from making costly design mistakes - like buying pieces too big for the room - and you can ask them to give you a call when specific items or sales arrive.

- Nurture the Furnishings Protect your investments by taking good care of your furniture, rugs, leather, and fabric upholstery. Leather Care Leather upholstery is generally very durable; however, you may want to have pieces treated with a protective topcoat if you have children or pets. Regularly dust the leather with a soft dry cloth. If a spill does occur, blot excess liquid immediately with an absorbent rag. Then wipe the area of the spill (entire cushion or panel) gently with clear, lukewarm water. Let air dry. Rug Care Refer to manufacturers’ care instructions and save in household files. In general, treat large rugs as you would wall-to-wall carpeting. Small rugs are difficult to vacuum, so shake them out regularly and use a laundry line or chair to hold the piece while you beat it with a broom. If the rug is washable, wrap each hank of fringe so it doesn’t become entangled in the machine, and always use the delicate cycle. Lay rugs to dry flat on a worktable or drop cloth to avoid distorting the shape. Hardwood Care Determine your finish so you may properly care for it. It’s the finish after all, not the wood, which you’ll be treating. For all finishes, though, use a clean, lint-free cloth to dust several times a week. Protect from extremely moist or dry conditions, direct sunlight and water, especially contact with flower vases and water glasses. Wash once a year with a sudsy mix of water and mild soap. Rinse with a clean damp cloth, and then dry immediately with another.
