Dalmation Molly: Brackish Fish

Shannon Frye
You probably do not know what a brackish fish is. This means that the fish isn't a saltwater fish and it isn't a freshwater fish. You must start out with a freshwater fish tank and then add a small amount of salt to the water. You will want to purchase a hydrometer to check and make sure there is enough salt in the water for the brackish fish. One type of brackish fish is know as the Dalmatian Molly. This fish has this name because it actually looks like a Dalmatian because it is white with black spots.

You will want to keep the temperature in your fish tank around 70 to 80 degrees. You will need to purchase a heater to keep the tank from getting too cool. You will also want to keep your tank from getting too warm by placing your light on a timer. That way your tank will not get heated up by having your light on for too long. You will want to leave your light on for around 6 hours but not too much longer or this will heat up the water in your fish tank and cause the Dalmatian Molly to become stressed out and eventually die.

This fish is a very peaceful fish. You can place several of these fish together in a community tank but they are live bearers and they mate all the time. You can have around 10 or 12 of these fish in a 40 gallon tank. These fish will usually reach about 3 inches in length which is about twice the size of your average Fancy Guppy. If you are looking for a freshwater fish that you can keep which stays small, a Guppy might be a better choice. The Dalmatian Molly needs to be placed in brackish water and it needs enough room to swim and roam for food.

You can purchase one of these fish for around $3. You can find them at any local pet store but do not purchase the fish unless they have it in a brackish tank. Ask them what they keep the salinity level at to make sure that the water is brackish and not completely saltwater. If the fish is already stressed out and you move the fish into your tank it will probably get sick and die. When it comes to feeding this fish, you will want to feed it a variety of fish flakes as well as some different types of frozen foods such as brine shrimp.

I PURCHASED A BLACK AND WHITE AND A WHITE AND BLACK; THE BLACK AND WHITE HAD THE BABIES SHORTLY AFTER WE PURCHASED THEM. SHE HAD 20 BABIES AND 15 LIVED; WE HAVE OTHER FISH IN THE TANK. I JUST MOVED A FEW PLANTS TO THE CORNER WHERE THE HEATER IS AND THEY STAYED THERE. THEY GROW QUICKLY AND BEGIN GETTING THEIR SPOTS WITHIN 2 WEEKS. WE HAVE A YELLOW FANTAIL LIKE GUPPY FISH THAT CHASED THE FEMALE DALMATION AFTER SHE GAVE BIRTH AND I TOOK IT OUT OF THE LARGE TANK FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND THEN PLACED IT BACK IN AND IT STOPPED CHASING HER. STRANGE!

So i bought my first molly fish about 2 wks ago. Pretty sure she is going to have babies.. (at least thats what the guy at pet store said) I feed her 2x a day but she seems to eat all the food right away and i'm not sure if i should feed her more cause she seems like shes still hungry?

I also keep reading about the fish to learn all i can so i put her in a net, she's been in it since i got her. I'm worried she needs more room. I don't know how long it takes for them to give birth. I've heard one month, 2months and a few weeks so any help/advice i would be grateful for!! Thanks T
