Damaged Planet

From where I sit on this damaged planet
I can see the still winter-naked tree
Through my window
It's trunk clothed in determined ivy
creeping ever upwards
Convolutions of limbs
Appealing to the just-light sky
Frozen as if in pain.

A whisper of wind ruffles the ivy's feathers
But leaves the tree itself indifferent.

This morning I woke surprised to find the world still turning
The dawning sun still where it was supposed to be.
In the hollow early hours I'd dreamed of Earth's destruction
No drama - just a sudden snuffing out
As if God had pressed 'delete' having given up on us.

And in an echo of that dream the tree outside
To my newly woken ears seemed to sigh a sad rebuke,
"What have you done to our world?"

I heard and was ashamed
On this damaged planet
This morning.
