Miss Taylor's many marriages, including one remarriage to Richard Burton, have been all over the gossip columns for decades.
Her first marriage to Conrad Hilton Jr. took place on May 6, 1950 in Beverly Hills when Liz was only 18 years old. She had just finished filming "Father of the Bride." Domestic violence was widely reported to be the cause of their divorce which took place in February 1951, not even a year after the marriage.
During the filming of "Ivanhoe" in 1952, the violet eyed star took up with English actor, Michael Wilding. They married on Feb. 21, 1952, in Westminster at the Caxton Registry Hall. Wilding was 20 years older than the 19 year old Taylor. They had two sons, Michael and Christopher. She filmed "Giant" during this marriage, but the end was already in sight and the couple separated in July of 1956.
Broadway and movie producer, Mike Todd married Elizabeth Taylor on Feb. 2, 1957. They had a daughter, Elizabeth Frances, or Liza, in August of the same year. The marriage ended in tragedy when Mike Todd died in a plane crash on March 22, 1958 while flying to accept his honors as the Friar Club of New York's Showman of the Year. The 26 year old widow sought solace in the arms of Debbie Reynold's husband, Eddie Fisher.
The Taylor-Fisher-Reynolds scandal of the late 1950s was an even bigger scandal than the Jolie-Pitt-Aniston tale, if you can imagine. Debbie Reynolds was the girl next door. The Fishers had children and so did Taylor. Worst of all, Debbie and Elizabeth were, up till then, friends. Despite her husband's tragic death, Liz's reputation took quite a hit. When she divorced Fisher in 1962 and took up with co-star Richard Burton, things certainly did not improve in the gossip columns. Fisher and Taylor had an adopted daughter, Maria, and Elizabeth was awarded custody in court.
On the set of "Cleopatra," Liz began a very public affair with Burton, who was married to Sybil Burton. The "adulterous" couple married at the Ritz-Carlton in Montreal on March 15, 1964, shortly after Burton divorced his wifel. Their tempestuous marriage always made for great "Liz and Dick" headlines. They worked together in many movies both before and during their marriage, including "The Sandpiper," "The Taming of the Shrew," and the one that got her one of her Best Actress Academy Awards: "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf." I always thought that Richard Burton was the love of Elizabeth's life and even after they were divorced in 1974, their passionate relationship continued. They remarried on Oct. 10, 1975 in Botswana, but divorced less than a year later. Elizabeth was devastated when Burton died in 1984, even though he was married to someone else by then.
Never short of male admirers, the fabulous Miss Taylor married former secretary of the U.S. Navy John William Warner Jr. on Dec. 4, 1976. She helped him campaign for a Senate seat in Virginia and also battled weight problems. They separated at the end of 1981 and Elizabeth remained single for the next two years. However, her addiction to drugs and alcohol spiraled out of control in those years. When her family intervened, she checked into the Betty Ford Clinic in December 1983. There she would meet construction worker Larry Fortensky. The two were married on Oct. 6, 1991, at Michael Jackson's Neverland Valley Ranch and the host escorted Taylor down the aisle. Liz and Larry's common bond in struggling against addiction was not enough to make the marriage last and they divorced on in Nov. of 1996.
The 5'2" glamour icon retired in 2003. Her last movie, "These Old Broads," was in 2001 and was co-written by Eddie Fisher's daughter, Carrie. Elizabeth has been known to do some voiceover work, so we may get to hear her again and she may yet tweet someday that she is engaged. Just not right now.

Post a Commentgreat write up!
Interesting to read and nicely put together-- I guess the originators of the marriage story forgot to notate their sources....
Really nice piece on Liz Taylor. My mom has been quite a fan of hers my whole life. I should print this article for her. She'd love it! Good job.
Terrific,I really enjoyed this. Even the comments are fascinating. Debbie Reynolds is 74!!??!! Lick???!!
A fabulous article, Valerie. Elizabeth Taylor is one of my favorite movie stars. A few years ago, our family attended a Debbie Reynolds concert in Brisbane, Australia (near where I live). She was 74 at the time. In her chat, she revealed that her friendship with Elizabeth Taylor has been re-ignited and that she often goes over with a cake so they can have coffee and chat. I can imagine Debbie being that nice. Elizabeth will always be fodder for the rumor mongers. It is a pity she is still not making movies, but we have all those treasures to re-view.
If I was divorced seven times or whatever it is I'd probably not get married again ether. Wonder what would have happened if Mike Todd hadn't died in that plane crash?
These days with the "Bennifer" and "Brangelina" nicknames, don't you think "Liz and Dick" would have been called "Lick"? I'm just sayin...
