I have been on a rollercoaster of faith issues, personal issues, and social issues for the past 6 months or so. I have sought advice from all kinds of people, and they don't really offer me any comfort, nor answers that make sense to the questions I often ask. I realize that there is only so much that we, as humans, can understand and comprehend, but at the same time the things that are beyond that level of comprehension should make sense. I struggle with the conceptualized nature of the Christian God the most. It seems that throughout our history we try to make sense of things we don't understand, and in doing so we humanize the unknown... Reading through the bible all you read is a God that possesses human qualities, which is supposedly to be understood as being created in his image. However, if God is as ultimately divine as we are to understand him to be, then how can God be understood using human concepts? It doesn't make sense to me. So, the question becomes, what do you do? You can't go to church, because they all teach you the same things, you can't talk to theologians, or any other scholar because they are all operating in the same premises. I just don't know. Any help would be awesome, even though I am not asking you to tell me what to believe, just guidance of an outside source. Assistance with making sense... I don't know. Thanks!
JC) You said it, the conceptualized nature of the Christian God. Isn't this something that comes with faith? Faith is just that, the human concept we use to understand. Fact is, religion cannot be fully comprehended, hence, faith. All Gods, Angels, Demons, etc...are basically an explanation for the unknown, so in reality we are humanizing the concept of death with another unknown. Sure, there are claims of proof that God or Gods exist, the same goes for Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster and other cryptids. Nothing is concrete here, theories are all we have beyond the realm of understanding.
As a matter of faith, each of us chooses where to place our thoughts in order to please our need for comfort. Some of us choose science, the search for the unknown in wormholes, space-time and other concepts, some of us choose to place our faith in religion. It seems your struggle is not with religion, it really is with faith. If you cannot wholly believe in what your current religion requests of you, locate something that you can believe in. There are rules with everything, no one says they have to be followed. If your current religious outlook is not what is working for you, there is no reason not to borrow from other religions/beliefs in order to create what does work.
All religion has something positive within it's borders, which is why so many people invest themselves in them. The only perimeters to operate within are yours, what works for you may not work for others and vice versa. You will naturally put your faith, unquestionably, into what is right for you. How will you know? You will only know when you come out the other side and look back at the path you have chosen. Best of Luck.
