Dan Logue's Texas Trip Credited to Gavin Newsom

Inaccurate Reporting or Lies?

Lorraine Yapps Cohen
Wouldn't you know it? Gavin Newsom managed to grab the credit for Dan Logue's lead in California's recent Assembly trip to Texas.

As you know...
Republican California Assemblman Dan Logue arranged to meet with Texas Governor Rick Perry. Economic disaster in the Golden State required new innovative ideas to help turn the state around. Because Texas shines so far above other states in business opportunity, Logue sought a vision for California and ways it might follow in the footsteps of the Lone Star State.

Naturally, Republicans in the Assembly lapped it up, signing on to make the trip to Texas with Logue. Democrat Assembly members, however, thumbed their collective nose at the idea. But not Newsom. Was there something he could learn?

Nothing new for Newsom
Gavin Newsom, Lieutenant Governor of California and next in line for governor after Jerry Brown, seemed to see more opportunity for photos than business on the Texas trip. He horned in on the Republican-led journey, accompanied Republican Assembly men and women, and met a Republican governor in a business friendly state. Such circumstances are so far removed from Newsom's politics that one wonders what motivated him to go at all.

Now we know
Now it comes out. Newsom is credited with leading the trip!

"A group of California officials, led by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, recently trekked to the Lone Star State to learn possible lessons about what drives job creation." (my bold.)

Three things to note: First, here is a misstatement in black and white! Do we dare call it a lie in black and white? Second, notice the publisher of the, ahem, inaccurate statement being none other than Yahoo Finance. Third: Notice the credit-mongering tactics of politicians who posture for press on others' efforts.

No lie: Texas for jobs
In reverence to the rest of the Yahoo Finance piece, it presented the line-up of "Best Cities for Jobs" as being ones mostly in Texas. No inaccuracies there, including Jerry Brown's Oakland, CA, being last on the list.

The moral of the story is that you can't quite believe everything you read. Not even here.
