Dan Snyder Trying Again to Buy the Washington Redskins a Title

Like Many in Washington, Mr. Snyder Overspends Only to Get Little ROI

Vonda Menard
Daniel Snyder should write a book and call it How Not to Build a Successful NFL Team. Since buying the Washington Redskins in 1999, Snyder has had an open wallet policy. He's ushered in free agents, signing them to huge contracts and getting little in return. Dana Stubblefield*, Deion Sanders, Brandon Lloyd*, Adam Archuleta, all big name free agents signed by Snyder, players that were supposed to help the Redskins become contenders in the NFC East. These players were signed with high hopes, but left after disappointing stints with the Redskins. Since Snyder has owned the team, the Redskins have enjoyed little success.

This year when free agency began, the Redskins were once again first in line. Like concert goers who've waited all night to buy concert tickets, Snyder was first to throw money at Albert Haynesworth and locked him up with a 7 year deal worth over $100 million dollars. as reported by, USAToday. I will cut Snyder some slack for the Haynesworth signing, he's coming off a great year and he is only 27. One caveat , injuries have been a problem for Haynesworth and it should be a slight concern for the Redskins.

Haynesworth wasn't they only one who was shown the money. DeAngelo Hall was resigned for $55 million for 6 years, according to USAToday. Hard to believe a player the Raiders released, would warrant that much money.

It's not just in free agency that Snyder has seemingly sabotaged his team. Before the 2008 season he traded for Jason Taylor, giving the Miami Dolphins a 2nd round draft pick in this years draft and a 6th round pick in 2010, according to ESPN. Jason Taylor played one injury shortened season for the Redskins. He was released this year, after not agreeing to participate in an off-season workout program. So, the Redskins traded away a 2nd round draft pick to rent the services of Jason Taylor for a season, rent in New York isn't even that high.

The Redskins finished last season 8-8. They play in the NFC East, one of, if not the, toughest division in the NFL. Daniel Snyder continues to try and keep up with the Jones's, but he keeps falling short and no, that's not a comment on Snyder being vertically challenged.

To date, Mr. Snyder has had limited success in buying a championship. I get it Mr. Snyder, you want to win, but you need to build a team, not just plug in a couple of pretty expensive pieces and think that turns the frog into a prince. If Snyder spends this freely while working with a salary cap, I can't imagine the money that'll be flying in 2010, when there is no cap.

Snyder fits in perfectly in Washington, a lot of spending with little to show for it.

*notes- Dana Stubblefield was actually signed a couple of years before Snyder bought the Redskins.
While, Brandon Lloyd was signed to a large contract, he was not a free agent, he was obtained via a trade with the San Francisco 49ers.

I would write that if I believed that, but sorry I do think they are making the same mistakes. Hey, maybe they'll prove me wrong. We're all entitled to our own opinions. Keep the comments coming, you should stick up for your team.

We don't have to read it... but, as a journalist, wouldn't you want to write about something that has not been beaten into the ground sooooo much. Maybe you could put your own spin on it, making people realize your creativeness. I'm sure that won't happen. Bashing Snyder is too much of an easy target to pass up.

Why not write about how the Redskins are NOT making the same mistakes. They are NOT signing "old" free agents past their prime. Now that would be a different spin BUT we couldn't expect someone like you to think of that on your own. Glad I could help. ;)

Well since haynesworth was just signed in 09' I don't know how this analysis was astute in 03'? If Snyder keeps doing it, people will keep writing about it, but you have the choice not to keep reading it.

If you look at the articles I've written this is the only one I've written about the Redskins. I write about all teams and it'll please you to know that I'm working on a 49ers article. In the article I talk about how we haven't had a good QB since Steve Young and how our draft has been horrible.

  • Worst article ever.3/18/2009

This same article has been written so many times, this borders on plagarism. Beat a dead horse much? This analysis was astute in 03', now it reads like you are the fat marathon runner who is so far behind the pack that he thinks he is in first place, when in actuality the whole field has lapped him. Great job! Len Pasquarelli called, he wants his schtick back.

You are definitely entitled to your opinion but what about the other trades and free agents Synder brought in that have worked out. (i.e. Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, Shawn Springs, Marcus Washington, Cornelius Griffin, London Fletcher, Todd Collins, etc...).

Maybe you should worry about your 49ers... write an article about how they fail to succeed. Since Synder has been owner of the Redskins, their record has been 90-101. In that same time period, the 49ers have gone 88-104. Worry about what your team should be doing to get better and stop focusing on the Redskins.

My apologies to Mr. Snyder, Dan Stubblefield wasn't your mistake.

I know Lloyd was a trade, I'm a 49er fan and I remember it, at the time I was upset. Daniel Snyder flew Lloyd in his private jet to Washington the same time he was going after Randel El. I understand the Taylor signing was an emergency, but I think it was an overreaction.

As you can tell I'm not a fan of Dan Snyder's style of creating an NFL team. I think his moves ultimately set his team back.

Snyder wasn't the owner when the Skins signed Stubblefield. Lloyd was a trade not a free agent.

Taylor was an emergency pickup when two defensive ends went down on the first day of training camp. If you were aware he would get hurt, when he hadn't suffered a severe injury in his career I wish you would have provided this information to the Redskins.
