Dance like No One is Watching

Who is Shaking Their Booty?

I had a hard time finding out who the original author of the following famous quote was, but whether it was William Purkey or Mark Twain - it's a classic. If you know the author, feel free to leave it in the comment section.

"Sing like no one's listening, love like you've never been hurt, dance like nobody's watching, and live like its heaven on earth."

I hope you take a moment to watch this tiny tree frog do its ten-second booty dance. It just goes to show that it's not your size that matters; it is all in how you portray yourself to the world. Believe me, I know, because although I am only 5'1" tall, I can be intimidating to the best of them!

You can watch the frogs get jiggy here

My great-grandniece, Olivia Grace, has been "shaking her booty" since before she could toddle around on her own. My niece, Katie, would say, "Shake your booty, Olivia" and the little sweetheart would proceed to shake it as fast and as hard as she could.

When I read recently that a tiny Panamanian tree frog species gets "jiggy with it" to intimidate rivals, my thoughts turned toward little Olivia. I wonder if the shyness gene eludes this species of tree frogs like it has bypassed most of my family. Olivia doesn't care who is watching or who isn't even paying attention to her. When her mom says "shake your booty" - Olivia follows through and delivers.

Ever since I was a little girl, I would get out and dance on the dance floor or in a crowd, oblivious to anyone or everyone who was watching me. If I wanted to "shake my booty" then I would just get out there and do it. Others are shy and prefer not to be the very first one on the dance floor often waiting until someone else goes out there first. Not so with me, if I hear a song that gets my feet tapping then I am heading out to dance.

My father told me once, "Someone has to be first, let it be you."

Dance as if no one were watching you and, if they are, just smile back at them and they will join you on the dance floor.

I don't like the way I dance, so I seldom do it unless it's with my grandchildren and nobody else is watching. Love the name, Olivia Grace, by the way.

I use to love to dance. I don't do it anymore and I miss it.

Dancing is life, feeling the music is joy. Just having celebrated my 30+ (gasp) birthday I realize how important it is to dance the music of life.

    So cool!

Great post, and great advice. I am really self concious when I dance in public, so I tend to not do it a lot. I'm not exactly like Elaine on Seinfeld... but just not a wild mover.

Sound advice from Miss Michele. And frogs are so cool.

Great thoughts! Although, that video kind of creeps me out. :)

Too many people allow themselves to get shy and flustered when it's time to dance in public, but in reality, everyone has the ability, they've just forgotten how to use it. Watching babies is a testament to this fact! (Babies are soo cute when they boogie)

I love to dance if the music is right, but I have a hard time being the first one out on the dance floor. I need a big crowd or no one at all to see me.
