Dance-Themed Weekend Trips from NYC

Social Dancing for Everyone in New York

For those who love dance either as participants or audience members, a variety of dance-themed weekend trips are available from New York City year round.

One place to consider for a weekend dance-themed getaway is New Haven, home of Yale University. Not only are several good dance companies often performing in New Haven, but the city also has a rich social dance scene with regular events like the once monthly Friday night Elm City Waltz and periodic historical theme balls from The Elegant Arts Society which take place on Saturdays. Both events are suitable to beginners as well as advanced dancers. English Country dancing, contra dancing and sacred circle dancing are all also readily available as part of a dance-themed weekend trip. New Haven is easily accessible from New York City by Metro North and by car. Neither trip should take more than two hours. Be advised, however, that because of the presence of Yale, hotel rooms in New Haven can be hard to come by and it is important to plan ahead for many weekends with major dance events.

For those in the New York City area who don't want to go through the hassle of planning their dance-themed weekend trip themselves, pre-planned dance weekend are available from Stardust Dance Productions. This company organizes ballroom dance weekends in the Catskills that feature dance lessons, balls, and focus on the glamor and sociability of traditional dance forms. Both Latin and Big Band music is featured on these dance-themed weekend trips and private instruction is also available.

If you are in the immediate Metro New York City Area you should check out the NYC Dance Connection website, which not only lists regular local events, but links to hundreds of dance groups specializing in every conceivable style of social dance including tango, ballroom, Scottish and contra dancing. This is a great hub website to use to find events to plan your own perform dance-themed weekend trip in the New York City metro area.

  • Exciting social dance event weekends are held in many locations convenient to New York City.
  • Most social dance weekends have instruction for both beginner and advanced dancers.
  • Popular social dance events include contra dances, milongas and historic balls.
While we think of the waltz as a staid and conservative dance today, when it debuted in England in the Regency era is was considered so scandalous that even Lord Byron objected to it.
