Dancing with the Devil

Micro Fiction

Julie Michael
Did anyone notice the girl walking with the bruises on her? Did they think she deserved it? She hoped no one noticed her, to be unnoticed was safer. She'd gotten involved with the devil himself, had the bruises and scars to prove it.

Her back still wasn't healed from when he'd put cigarettes out on it a week before, and he'd managed to re-crack her ribs. That was an old injury- from one of the devils she'd met when she was 13. But she tried not to think about that, that was so long ago- and she felt she'd had that coming as well. She'd led that Devil on, so she shouldn't have been surprised when he'd taken what he'd wanted from her.

Biting her lip to keep from crying in agony as she boarded the bus, bruised and raw though it was, she knew then that she'd never be able to trust any man again.

She remembered the first time she'd met him on the bus. He was so sweet- she, so scared, she knew no one and was afraid of rejection. At 15, she'd already learned that others could be cruel and indifferent to anyone who wasn't "cool." He himself was "different," a different way of dressing, acting, and talking.

She was secretly thrilled when he offered to let her sit next to him. It because a daily thing for the rest of the year. She discovered they had a lot in common, music, interests, etc. Never did he show any sign of disrespect or the darkness she'd later discover in his soul.

After he'd graduated, she lost contact with him for a year or so. When they ran into each other again, it was when she was at a friend's house. Immediately they renewed their friendship. It was as if they'd never lost contact. In her mind, she knows now, that she thought he was "safe." That was when she still had hope of a normal life, hope that there were really men out there who wouldn't hurt women they claimed to love.

It wasn't that she loved him, never did she think she did. She thought with time, she'd learn to believe he loved her, and maybe she'd love him back some day. That was "before." Before he shattered what little faith she had left in men and humanity, and love. He took what he claimed was love, and nearly destroyed her with it.

This is such a sad, but well-written story! I pray, too, you were not a victim of this horrible behavior! Best of luck in the contest!

It's so easy to fall in the trap of abusive relationships. The dark side isn't always seen at first meetings.

Powerful stuff. I hope nothing like that has ever happened to you...abuse is a horrible thing, and wrecks people in ways that many people can't understand.
