A low impact style like ballroom dancing works well for senior citizens unable to perform fast movements, while more active seniors may enjoy something faster like a salsa or line dance. Whatever your amount of fitness, dancing lessons are a fun way for senior citizens to keep fit and socialize.

Because of the difficulty of many of the movements involved, dancing lessons can be good exercise for senior citizens. Every part of the body gets a great workout, since the legs, arms, and core muscles are needed for each movement. A number of challenging dance positions also expand the muscles, improving flexibility, which is crucial for senior citizens.

You should be able to find dancing lessons for senior citizens at your local community center or senior activity center. Private dance schools are another alternative if dancing lessons are not available at a public facility. You do not have to attend dancing lessons specifically designated for senior citizens. As long as you choose a low-impact dance style, you should be fine in a class with younger students. If you are unable to locate a group class that is the right difficulty level, you might be able to take private dancing lessons from the school's instructor. Senior citizens living in group homes or assisted living centers may wish to put their money together with other residents to have a dance instructor come out to the home for lessons.

People can often be self-conscious during dancing lessons, which is one of the reasons is it better to attend senior citizen-only classes.
