Dancing with the Stars 2009 Week 5 Recap: Donny Rules!

Hartley Engel
It's already week 5 of Dancing with the Stars 2009 and Monday night's performance show was exceptionally entertaining. The 10 remaining couples danced either the Argentine Tango or the Paso Doble. The group dance was The Hustle. Here's a brief recap:

Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson - Much respect to Donny Osmond for dancing up a storm despite the fact that he has an insanely busy schedule (his Vegas show runs four nights a week). Donny and Kim pulled off an amazing Argentine Tango and it was reflected in their score - an amazing 29, the highest of the season.

Mya and Dmitry Chaplin - Another compelling performance by Mya and Dmitry - this time it was the Argentine Tango. The judges ragged on Mya for being too distant, but, then again, they're always ripping into her a little extra hard because she sets the bar so high. Score: 27.

Mark Descascos and Lacey Schwimmer - I wasn't feeling Lacey Schwimmer's severe hair style, but her choreography was excellent and so was Mark's performance in this respectable Paso Doble. Score: 26.

Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff - Kudos to Aaron Carter (you gotta love his competitive spirit) for redeeming himself (at least in the judges' eyes) with a strong performance. Score: 24.

Kelly Osbourne and Louie van Amstel - Because she was dancing to her father's song, "Crazy Train," Kelly felt even more pressure than she normally does to do a good job - and she delivered the goods. She's really turning into an excellent little hoofer. Score: 24.

Joanna Krupa and Maksim Chmerkovskiy - I'm not a big fan, but I must hand it to Joanna Krupa for doing a fine job despite the fact that she had to dance without her usual partner, Derek Hough, who was ill with the flu. Maksim is quite a bit bigger than Derek, so I'm sure making the switch took some getting used to. Score: 24.

Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Ballas - Not a particularly memorable performance, but that might be due to the fact that Mark Ballas was a little under the weather. But I hope it was good enough to keep Melissa Joan Hart in the competition because she seems to be enjoying herself - and I think she's capable of turning in some great performances - provided she's given the right dance style. Score: 23.

Natalie Coughlin and Alec Mazo - How about that costume Natalie was rocking? I'm lovin it! But that cover version of "American Woman" she and Alec danced to was absolutely heinous. I thought Natalie and Alec's Paso Doble was excellent, but the judges clearly didn't agree. Score: 22.

Louie Vito and Chelsie Hightower - It seems like Louie is starting to get more comfortable on the dance floor (and perhaps falling in love with Chelsie), but he just doesn't have the chops to be a contender. Score: 22.

Michael Irvin and Karina Demidova - Michael's days on DWTS are numbered - though the fans might keep him around for awhile (and that's a beautiful thing because I really enjoy looking at ultra-sexy Karina Demidova who, by the way, looks fabulous as a brunette). Oh, and the butt clenching bit was hysterical. Score: 21.

Group Dance: The Hustle - The standouts for me were Donny Osmond and Kelly Osbourne. And what was that sitting on top of Alec's head? It looked like two squirrels hopped up on his head and decided to get it on.

Now that Natalie is off the show, there's really no point in watching anymore. She was by far one of the better dancers. There were at least 3 or 4 other couples that clearly should have been eliminated ahead of her. This is ridiculous. Don't the voters have eyes????
