The "Dancing with the Stars" week 5 results show opened with co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke revealing the first results, as they called NFL star Hines Ward and actress Kirstie Alley forward to hear their fates. Hines and partner Kym Johnson were cleared to dance again, while Kirstie and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy remained in jeopardy. Tom then turned to head judge Len Goodman and Sir Crankypants asked rapper Romeo and Chelsie Hightower to perform their "New York, New York" Foxtrot as the week's encore dance. The reprisal was smooth, slick and fun, just like the original.
After a break, Toby Keith lit up the ballroom with his megahit single "Should've Been a Cowboy". "DWTS" pros Lacey Schwimmer and Maksim Chmerkovskiy joined the "Dancing with the Stars" troupe with a countrified turn around the dancefloor. Yeehaw! I've heard a lot of singers sound really bad on "DWTS", but Toby sounded awesome. It's too bad he didn't look especially excited to be there.
Back in the Red Room, Brooke chatted with the three teams that tied for second place last night. Disney actress Chelsea Kane, noting that next week would be Guilty Pleasures week, said she and partner Mark Ballas had a fun song for the Quickstep, should they make it through. Rapper Romeo adopted a bizarre accent, and wrestler Chris Jericho mocked said accent. (Yup, that's what I got out the exchange.) Chelsea and Mark were first to be proclaimed safe, followed by Romeo and Chelsie Hightower. Chris and partner Cheryl Burke found themselves in jeopardy alongside Kirstie and Maks.
Up next, a silly segment featuring "Dancing with the Stars" 2011 reject Mike Catherwood exploring the show's conspiracy theories. The best part of the segment was by far Maksim Chmerkovskiy telling Kirstie Alley "I'm a stick that's been dipped in a boiling pot of sex". Muwahahaha!
The week's Macy*s Stars of Dance performance followed. The piece was choreographed by Jamal Simms and set to the tune of "Tightrope". Mad flavor, baby. Mad flavor. It was like a little slice of Broadway in the ballroom.
Following a break, Brooke interviewed the remaining three couples in the Red Room. Model Petra Nemcova was so distracted by Maks' little taped self-promotional piece (dude, me too) that she couldn't come up with answers to Brooke's queries, and Playboy Playmate Kendra Wilkinson said she enjoyed having danced the show's 1,000th routine. Ralph Macchio expressed the notion that he and Karina Smirnoff had faced a disadvantage in performing first. And then... more results! Ralph and Karina were declared safe, followed by Kendra and partner Louis van Amstel. Petra and partner Dmitry Chaplin remained in jeopardy.
So it's either Kirstie and Maks, Petra and Dmitry or Chris and Cheryl getting the boot. No! I like them all! Ugh.
When the "Dancing with the Stars" 2011 week 5 reuslts show resumed after a break, Toby Keith returned to the stage with his hit "American Soldier". Married "DWTS" pros Anna Trebunskaya and Jonathan Roberts joined him with a visual accompaniment. Again, he sounded awesome. And this song always makes me cry. I was totally swept away by the entire number.
Up next, the judges talked competition turkey and examined each of the remaining competitors. Len knocked Kendra for her lack of confidence, while Carrie Ann picked at Petra's failure to transition from one pose to the next. She also wished Hines would take more risks, and said Chris lacked musicality. Len said that Chelsea needs to get a "blend" of original and fresh techniques. Len said that Ralph needs to work on fluidity, while Carrie Ann dinged Kirstie for lack of stamina. Finally, Bruno knocked Romeo for a lack of control.
And then... the final elimination! Yay! Well, not really. It's a bummer to lose any of them. Kirstie and Maks were declared safe, leaving Petra and Dmitry and Chris and Cheryl up for a booting. Len complained that "neither of these deserve to be there" and raged over the "madness" that either would be eliminated. Following the dramatic music and the always-lengthy pause, Petra Nemcova was eliminated from "Dancing with the Stars" 2011. Aw, well that sucks. The always gracious supermodel called it a "life-changing" experience. Aw, I'm so sad she's leaving. I actually teared up watching their parting package.
So with that, "Dancing with the Stars" 2011 week 5 is in the books. Tune in next Monday at 8 p.m. to catch week 6 action. Then watch again Tuesday as another contestant gets the boot; "American Idol" cast-off Pia Toscano is slated to perform alongside bud Mark Ballas. Or you can just check in with me. You know I'll be watching.
