Dancing with the Stars Episode 15: Will Brandy and Jennifer Pass Elimination Even Though They're on Top?

Will Bristol Make it Through Even Though, Once Again, She's at the Bottom?

Jolie du Pre
Dancing with the Stars, episode 15, was a night of Instant Dances, which meant that the celebrities had to perform two dances, one of them being an Instant Dance. For their Instant Dances, the five remaining stars knew the dances they were to perform beforehand, but not the songs.

By reaching into a mirror ball, after they performed their first dances, the stars pulled out the music for their Instant Dances.

Confidence is important for Instant Dances due to the limits on preparation. In 11 seasons of Dancing with the Stars, Instant Dances have never been done before.

Round 1

Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer - Viennese Waltz

"This week it's make it or break it for me," said Kyle Massey. During rehearsals, Lacey was tougher on Kyle, but she made it clear it was nothing personal, only to help him with his footwork. "It's more important than ever that I get my footwork perfect," said Kyle.

For their dance, Lacey looked beautiful in a long green and white ball gown and short blond hair. Kyle looked sophisticated in a black suit. "I remember seven weeks ago when you were just a kid," joked host Tom Bergeron.

All of the judges - Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba were pleased with the dance. "We are all totally charmed by you," said Bruno.

"My crush on Kyle is back," Carrie Ann said. "It was like watching a fairly tale come to life."

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough - Quick Step

"I feel like we've gotten a second wind," said Jennifer. But Jennifer is still in great pain, and this time it's her knee. Can she make it through to the end?

Dr. Gary Brazina came in and told Jennifer what the deal is. "There is a fine line between when to say when enough is enough and when you're going to keep going," said the doctor.

Jennifer's dad, Joel Grey, showed up too. "My dad told me always, the show must go on," said Jennifer.

Watching Jennifer dance on Dancing with the Stars, episode 15, you'd never know she's in pain. "Looks like dad's pep talk worked," said Tom.

In the end, Jennifer and Derek did great with just a tiny misstep from Jennifer. "It was like a vintage Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers Quick Step," said Bruno.

9, 9, 9 = 27 out of 30

Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya - Waltz

Kurt says there is a similarity between preparing to dance and preparing for a football game - an adrenaline rush. "With only five contestants left you definitely feel like it's playoff time," said Kurt.

The judges loved it, even though they all acknowledged that Kurt is not one of the best dancers in the competition. "You're like the Ken doll for mature people like me," said Carrie. "I see the effort with every single move you make."

"Obviously there are people who are better than you, but you've come a long way," said Bruno.

8, 8, 8 = 24 out of 30

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas - Argentine Tango

"Bristol's son went to stay with relatives this week, so she's missing him," said Mark. So homesick was Bristol that she went home and brought Mark with her. There they practiced as Sarah and Todd Palin watched.

Len and Bruno continued to pick up on Bristol's lack of intensity. However, Carrie Ann said, "That was the most intensity that we've ever seen from you."

8, 8, 8 = 24 out of 30

Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy - Waltz

Brandy and Maks are at the top of the leaderboard, but can they stay there? "I'm noticing the last couple of weeks, it's not just about the dancing, and it's not just about the high scores." Brandy said. "No one's safe."

"I have adjusted in my learning with Maks. We have found common ground, "said Brandy. "We are true partners now." Brandy and Maks no longer argue, but seem to be well blended.

"This was an exquisite interpretation of a song," said Bruno.

"I was overwhelmed by the whole performance," said Len.

Carrie liked the dance, but cautioned Brandy to watch her neck movements.

9, 10, 10 = 29 out of 30

Round 2 - Instant Dances

Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer - The Jive

"For Instant Dance, Kyle must focus on his steps," said Lacey. The funny Jackass star, Steve O, popped in at rehearsal to try and distract Kyle with all sorts of tricks - bubbles, nudity, a leaf blower. It was another silly Kyle moment.

"Top of the league for entertainment value and creativity," said Bruno."I loved every second of it."

"That was by far the most fun I have had as a viewer and as a judge, " said Carrie Ann

10, 9, 10 = 29 out of 30 Total 56

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough - The Rumba

"In the instant dance we have the Rumba, which is good because it's not so stressful on her knee, "said Derek. The Rumba is a sexy dance that requires trust.

"This challenge brings out the best in people," said Bruno.

"Absolutely superb. There's nothing more beautiful for me than to watch someone reclaiming their power, "said Carrie Ann.

The judges each gave Jennifer and Derek a perfect 10.

Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya - Cha Cha Cha

Anna choreographed to count and not to music for this one, but Kurt doesn't work that way, Anna noted. Kurt's kids stopped by to give him some help. "You need some musicality," said one of Kurt's daughters.

"Tonight you nailed everything," said Carrie Ann.

However, although Len and Bruno felt the performance was good, they felt that Kurt needed to work on his footwork. Kurt didn't want to hear that and was disappointed in his scores. But most fans would agree that Jennifer and Kyle's performances, for example, were more deserving than Kurt's.

8, 8, 8 = 24 out of 30 Total 48

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas - Samba

Mark reminded Bristol that you can't rely on the music in rehearsal, because you won't have any until the day of the competition.

"This is the most difficult Latin dance," said Len. "But for a difficult dance you did a wonderful job."

However, Carrie Ann was more critical. "This is the true test of musicality," Carrie said. She felt that Bristol and Mark did not match up to the music well. However, Mark said he lost the foot work which messed Bristol up.

Is it all Mark's fault?

7, 8, 8 = 23 out of 30 Total 47 (Bottom)

Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy - Cha Cha Cha

"The Instant Dance is a test to see if you are a natural dancer," said Brandy.

"Another fabulous performance to end a truly fantastic night," said Bruno.

But Carrie Ann was upset with Maks for bad choreography. She felt the dance should have been more of an "instant dance," shooting out of the gates right away. She didn't blame Brandy, only Maks. Professionals Maks and Carrie Ann battled back and forth disagreeing with each other.

"You did a Cha Cha Cha full of flair and performance," said Len. But Len did agree with Carrie about the choreography. Still, Bruno gave the couple a 10.

@Dozenz - you make some excellent points. I've never watched DWTS as much as I have this year, and some of what I've seen so far, quite frankly, has shocked me.

@Jolie - Sometimes the Judges are fair and score accordingly, but check out some recent performances. When Kyle/ Lacey get the same scores as Brandy/Maks and Jennifer/Derek you have to ask yourself.....was one performance just as good as the other?

I don't have scores from every performance i front of me, but there was one week when a very blah and ok dance by Kyle, many comments on how he needs to improve, which got the same scores as a Brandy or Jennifer one which had praise heaped on it for being spectacular.

Doesn't make sense if all dances were scored equally (like in an actual dance competition). The judges know the limits that a celebrity will get to, and they trust the viewers to keep the better one anyway (proven for the most part) so to "avoid being too mean" they give inflated scores to worse dancers higher scores so that it doesn't look too embarrassing.

    Jolie, thanks for the update!!

@Dozenz - Yep, I have a feeling that Kurt and Anna are going to be eliminated tonight, even though Kurt is a better dancer than Bristol. I'm not sure if I agree with you that the judges are harsher on the better dancers. I believe the judges have been fair. It's the public that has not been fair with their votes. Bristol will pass through again, I'm sure of it, even though she should have gone home a long time ago.(Everything you noticed about Bristol's dance, anyone who is honest noticed it too.) Yes, I was happy to see Kyle improve this week. But, again, I think Kurt and Anna are going to be eliminated tonight.

Also There was no way that Kyles first dance deserved 9s. It was ok but not as good as the others which got 9s.

Judging should alwasy be consistent. Whatever they give the first performance should set the bar. If they really felt Kyles first dance deserved 9s because it was well executed and perfmed superbly than all the other 1st round dances deserved nothing but 10s (9s for Kurt and some 8s for Bristol).

Big improvements in Kyle for his instant dance which really was a great performance and his best of the season (much better than his 1st dance). If Kyle wasn't as good I would not be so worried for Kurt.

Because of the judges bias in scoring, I think this will be another week where the worst dancer will not go home, so we may have seen the last dances performed by Kurt and Anna.

I have never liked that the judges claim (like Carrie did yesterday) that they have to judge on what is performed, but always seem to be harsher on the better dancers and more leniant with the worst.

I was mainly dissapointed in how Kurt's InstaDance was praised as being 100% on the steps, and the best charisma or character they have seen and yet still only deserved 8's with the only criticism was he could improve on his footwork a little(???). There was no way that you can justify his dance being equal to Bristol's, who fell off timing with her arm movements, had lazy and poorly executed kicks (not many of them either), and at one time (I rewinded to confirm) actually paused (as in stopped dancing) looked over at Mark to find her place and continued on (it was right after the shimmies where they bent back

Both Jennifer and Brandy are excellent dancers. I really envy Jennifer for being able to work through the pain. If either of these ladies get eliminated tomorrow, that is going to look really bad for DWTS.

What does being Black have to do with anything....I fail to see the relevance and why that is even necessary to divulge your ethnicity. you vote for whom you want to win...I'm sure there are people of all races voting for both Jennifer and Brandy. You don't need to justify the way you voted...especially mentioning the fact you are Black.

  • Carol- New Haven,ct11/8/2010

As a bkack women I voted for Jennifer around 8 times, Brandy was never someone I really cared for. and she act so fake on TV. I seen Jennifer with Dirty Dancing so she has my votes every week.
