'Dancing with the Stars' Episode 19: The Finalists Pull Out All the Stops

Bristol or Jennifer?

In the finals are Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer, Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas and Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough. But with all the controversy over Bristol Palin being in the finals, host Tom Bergeron made sure to remind people, "Now is not the time to sit back and let others determine your champions."

Voting for 'Dancing with the Stars' is open until 11 a.m. Eastern/8 a.m. Pacific, Tuesday, November 23, 2010. Viewers can visit the 'Dancing with the Stars' website to vote.

There were also several plugs for 'Skating with the Stars,' which was scheduled to follow immediately after the program.

Redemption Dances

Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer

The first dancers were called the redemption dances. These dances were assigned by the judges. They allowed the celebrities to improve on the dances where they were at their worst.

For Kyle Massey it was the Fox Trot. "I need you to be strict on me. I need you to be perfect, " Kyle said to Lacey. Kyle, who really wants to win, was all business.

Len Goodman came to rehearsals to help Kyle with his technique. Technique has always been Kyle's weakness.

The "Len Goodman School of Dance" seemed to work. Said Len after Kyle's Fox Trot, "You came out so much better."

Bruno Tonioli agreed that Kyle did well. But Carrie Ann Inaba looked forward to Kyle's freestyle and said Kyle could have done better with the Fox Trot.

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas

After all the controversy, Bristol said, "I'm more intimidated with the media stuff than with Jennifer and Kyle."

Bruno visited Bristol in rehearsals to teach her how to be a "wild child." It was an attempt to improve on the monkey suit dance, which was Bristol's worse.

The judges were pleased with Bristol's redemption dance. "Last time a gorilla, now a thriller, " said Len.

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough

The Paso Doble was the dance for Jennifer's redemption. "The Paso Doble was a low point for me, " said Jennifer.

Carrie Ann worked with Jennifer in rehearsals, and the result was perfect 10's on dance night.

"This is the meaning of redemption!" Screamed Carrie Ann. Len stood up and gave a standing ovation.

Freestyle

As former 'Dancing with the Stars' contestant Apolo Ohno said, "The Freestyle is the most important dance of the season."

Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer

"In order to win it, you have to push past those limits," said Kyle. Kyle and Lacey did an old school hip hop dance.

"I'm not a great lover of the boogaloo dancing, but I thoroughly enjoyed it," said Len.

"I dub you the Fresh Prince of 'Dancing with the Stars,' " said Carrie Ann.

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas

Bristol's Freestyle was based on the Broadway show "Chicago," but Todd and Sarah Palin likely never took their kids to a Broadway show, because Bristol said she's never been to one. That made it harder for Bristol to get into character. Also, because her character required her to be sexy and jump out of a cage - an image that Bristol is not about - that made it hard too. "I'm not a sexy girl, " said Bristol.

Bristol says there are a lot of haters out there who want to see her fail. She says it just gives her motivation to prove them wrong. But Bristol did not do as well as she would have liked with her Freestyle.

"I have to give you credit for aiming so high," said Bruno. "But it's not quite at the level that the dance requires." Carrie Ann was proud of Bristol for dancing out of the cage, but agreed with Bruno.

Len acknowledged that trying to copy a dance is difficult because you have to get the standard out of your head. But Len was pleased with the dance. "I didn't see it as a disaster," said Len. "I thought it was fantastic."

8, 9, 8 - for a total of 52 out of 60

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough

Jennifer needed to be careful with her Freestyle so that she would not injure her neck. But regardless of that, her dance was as perfect as the first.

"Whoever has the best freestyle usually ends up winning the show," said Lacey Schwimmer. Fans will have to wait for Tuesday to see if that is indeed the case.

10, 10, 10 - for a perfect 60 out of 60

The final show of 'Dancing with the Stars,' season 11, will air on Tuesday, November 23 9/8c.

@Dozenz - I agree with you on all counts. Kyle is more of an improved dancer than Bristol. Also, Bristol's freestyle incorporated a lot of moving across the floor, but not much else. Mark knows what he's doing, however. He knows Bristol can't dance. He knows Bristol is hung up on her declaration that she's not "sexy." However, he CAN'T come out and say Bristol can't dance. He can't come out and say what's really on his mind. He has to support his dancer. He has to make it easy for her. That's his job. I would have loved to have seen Brandy in the finals, because she deserved to be there and I believe she had a great chance of winning. But, the winner should be Jennifer. Will it be Jennifer? I'm not betting on it. Bristol is likely to win this thing. However, Sarah and Bristol know in their HEARTS that Bristol doesn't deserve to win, and that has to be good enough for me.

And i still think the judges need to be critical of the pros. Look at what Lacey and Derek choreographed. Then look at Mark. He pretty much deviated as little from the Chicago routine as possible (most likely to allow Bristol to learn the routine by watching the movie after practices), and incorporated as little dancing as possible..ie. eating up time with the cage, tons of shimmys and tugging of the ribbon, and lots of lift/hold of Bristol while mark twirled in a circle. That's week 1 material Mark.

I was impressed with Kyles's performance last night, and I stick to my assertion that he is the most improved all season.
I still think the judges were not as critical as deserving a final (on all contestants) as I was surpised by the lack of comments on certain dances.
Not susprisingly Bristol was bottom, and should have been slightly lower due to her poor legwork on the Jive and the lack of dancing on the freestyle (but Bristol can pull off a shimmy).
