Dancing with the Stars Episode 9: TV Theme Week for the Dancers
A Bad Birthday for Bristol the Pistol
Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Before the dancers performed, the judges gave their impressions of how the stars have done and what they need to do in the future. Carrie Ann Inaba said Brandy has all the ingredients to make a great dancer. However, Carrie says Brandy has a lot of insecurities that she needs to overcome, and if she can do that, she can go to the top of the leaderboard. And this week, Brandy did.
There has been ups and downs in Brandy and Maksim's relationship, but it's definitely an up now. It's clear that the two have learned to blend together and get along well. "It was without a doubt your best dance, " said Len Goodman after Brandy and Maksim performed. Carrie and Bruno both agreed that Brandy did a great job. When you watch Brandy and Maksim now, you see the chemistry and chemistry is very important.
The scores were 9, 9, 9 = 27. Brandy and Maksim are now the leaders.
Florence Henderson and Corky Ballas
Len says Florence is 76 years old but has still got it, and that she is improving on many levels. This week Florence and Corky danced to the theme from The Brady Bunch. During rehearsals, Florence invited Barry Williams, who played her son Greg Brady in The Brady Bunch, and who is now 56, to join her for a rehearsal.
Florence began her dance in a plaid house dress and then stripped to a long gown. Bruno Tonioli said Florence danced a beautiful Tango, but felt that it eventually went into rag doll mode. But Len felt that it was Florence's best dance.
The scores were 7, 7, 7 = 21
Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya
Len Goodman says Kurt is a true champion, a sportsman and a family man whose "musicality" has improved. Kurt admitted that he has overcome a lot in his life as an athlete and that if it worked for him in football, it will work for him in dance. The couple danced to the theme of Bewitched. Anna grew up in Russia, so her challenge was to perform to a song of a TV show she knows nothing about.
After the dance, Carrie said, "I just saw the spirit of Gene Kelly enter the body of Kurt."
"The magic is back," said Bruno.
The scores were 8, 8, 8 = 24
Audrina Patridge and Tony Dovolani
Len Goodman says Audrina is a bombshell that does a great job. But Len wants to see Tony push Audrina more, because there's no reason she can't win it all.
One of the things that Audrina needs more of when she dances is passion. Tony said that actor Richard Gere once said that eating garlic and onions before a love scene lessens the intensity and makes the experience more comfortable. Audrina did that during rehearsals and said that, " At the end of the day it took that awkwardness away." In the end, Audrina performed a good Rumba technically, but she still needed more passion. Bruno said, "Don't be plastic. Be fantastic."
The scores were 7, 8, 8, = 28
Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer
Bruno says, "Kyle is our star entertainer." But he says that Kyle has the intensity but not the technique. Kyle's focus is to get up the leaderboard rather than continue to go down. But unfortunately, Kyle and Lacey did not wow the judges this week.
"It started bad and it gradually got worse," said Len
"This was a Fox Trot possessed by disco fever," said Carrie Ann.
The scores were 8, 5, 7 = 20
Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke
Len Goodman says Rick is not just eye candy, but that Rick can really dance. Rick realizes that time is short, but Cheryl can sometimes get impatient with him. To help Cheryl realize what type of person Rick is, Rick had her meet Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson. Kobe said that Rick is a perfectionist and a total workaholic.
Rick and Cheryl were fine for Carrie and Bruno. But Len didn't get a feeling for a romance between a couple, more like "a couple staying married for the sake of the children."
The scores were 8,8,8 = 24
Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas
Bruno says that Bristol has guts to do what she's doing coming from where she comes from. He also says she has everything right, but she's not an entertainer. "She has to learn to become a character," says Bruno
Bristol says, "I'm just lucky I am still around." Mark and Bristol stripped out of monkey suits for the dance. But they still managed to score at the bottom of the leaderboard, even though during rehearsals Mark brought in professionals to teach Bristol how to relax and be funny.
This time, although there was a higher degree of performance, as Len noted, Bristol forgot some of the steps. Therefore, the technique was off. Not a good birthday for Bristol the Pistol.
The scores were 6, 6, 6, = 18
Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough
Carrie Ann says Jennifer is "unstoppable because she's hot, hot, hot." Jennifer is 50 years old but has the "energy and the sexy appeal of a 26 year old" says Carrie. But Carrie acknowledged that Jennifer has a tendency to wear her emotions on her sleeve and that gets in the way. During rehearsals, she got so upset with Derek she walked out for a few minutes. Their Fox Trot was good. Bruno felt it was pristine, elegant and beautifully dance, but Carrie and Len were not as blown away.
The scores were 8, 8, 9 = 25
The results of episode 9 will air 9/8c on Tuesday, October 19 on ABC

Post a CommentGreat job, Jolie, sorry to see Bristol go, but oh well!
With these awesome recaps Jolie, I don't even need to watch the show anymore LOL =0)
Also, ironically, her scores were 6/6/6. That spells doom. LOL
Bristol will probably get voted off tonight. The judges and the public gave her plenty of opportunities to improve. But the fact of the matter is, she's just not a good dancer.
Great recap. I didn't like the TV theme show for some reason. Maybe it was poor Bristol and her embarrassing gorrilla suit dance.
Excellent recap!
