'Dancing with the Stars' Movie Scores Week: Cher Pays a Visit to Chaz, Chynna Forgets and Ricki on Top (Again)

An Interesting Array of Dances & Movie Music During a Weird Night of Lackluster Dancing from the Stars and Pros

Maxine Nelson

Monday night (October 10) on "Dancing with the Stars" had a lot of potential to be fun and entertaining since the couples could use props and be more theatrical rather than literal with dance interpretation. Movie Scores Week allowed them to select an unlearned dance, but the movie and its music was chosen by the producers. Instead, it was a night of disappointments where one celebrity literally forgot her routine in a painful performance.

Others were sloppy in their dance moves while a few stood out from the rest of the crowd. It is now obvious who is in the top tier and those who are struggling. This recap for each couple states the movie title along with the dance, critique and score. It was certainly not like last week's amazing memorable year week, but the complete opposite.

Chynna Phillips - "Mission Impossible"

This had the most potential to be an incredibly entertaining dance of the whole night. Instead, it was one of the most disastrous I have ever seen on the show. Tony came down from the rafters all wired up like Tom Cruise in the film. When Chynna began her paso doble steps she almost seemed frozen. Something seemed to be going wrong. Then they stopped dancing for a little bit. Chynna was then making up the steps throughout the rest of her dance. I was truly embarrassed for her and Tony. She is trying way too hard to be like J.R. and Ricki. Amazingly they received all 7's in their scoring. 21

David Arquette - "Raiders of the Lost Ark"

He simply does not have the right posture, control and technique to be a potentially good dancer. I do like David, but he is not entertaining for me to watch. His paso doble was one of his best performances though. 23

Carson Kressley - "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl"

Unfortunately this week wasn't my favorite performance by Carson as I thought he was sloppy with the sword play and dance steps. However, he looked remarkable in his makeup and costume as a pirate. He was completely in character. Too bad his dancing the Viennese Waltz didn't match the rest. Carson received the lowest score of the night. 20

Nancy Grace - "Flash Gordon"

Sorry to say she is not improving whatsoever. She is too stiff, lacks technique and isn't connecting with the crowd. Her paso doble was a mess, especially at the end. The judge's sure do love her. Her scores were much too high. 21

Hope Solo - "Toy Story"

One of the cutest dances of the night I was amazed how much Hope looked in character as the doll, Jessie. The song and dance was very tender. Their foxtrot was Hope's best performance thus far. This was one of my favorites of the night. They definitely got some deserving scores. 24

Rob Kardashian - "Superman"

An OK performance as Clark Kent by Rob, but by no means this was a strong performance or his most improved. I had to agree when Len stated he looked like a waiter handing out bons bons. His paso doble was simply passable. What is up with the judges handing out such high scores? 24

Ricki Lake - "Psycho"

The music from this classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller was perfect for any tango as it has the staccato movement throughout. Quite frankly the movie is very creepy and violent, especially the infamous shower scene. Apparently Golden Child pro dancer and choreographer extraordinaire, Derek Hough, hasn't seen this film. The stabbing in the shower is not drawn out with some action in between and then the stabbing takes place. It just happens unexpectedly.

In the beginning of their tango they enact the shower scene with an escape by Ricki through a screen. Their tango represents the cat and mouse chase even as they are in hold throughout the dance. The ending is when the stabbing finally takes place. Derek didn't even do that correctly since it is an overhand stab, not an underhanded one that was done behind the scrim. Yes, the choreography was well executed, but Ricki's dancing was not worthy of two 10s. Why not stop the season and give them the bleeping trophy while you're at it? 29

Chaz Bono - "Rocky"

What a wonderful performance by one of my favorite films. Everybody loves an underdog, especially Chaz. It was great to see his mother, Cher, and other members of his family. His paso doble was remarkably set to the training sequences from the film. The ending was brilliant as he strode up those stairs just like Rocky did at the museum steps in Philadelphia. His mother was so proud during the judge's critique. 21

J.R. Martinez - "The Pink Panther"

Whereas Derek and Rick's dance was dark and violent J.R.'s and Karina's was the perfect foxtrot to end the show. The dancing from J.R. simply flowed from one step to another without missing a beat. He has great musicality and his technique is by far the best of all the celebrities, bar none. They added the right touch of comedy and style to a great comedic film that has spawned many sequels throughout the decades.

What was most appalling was the ridiculous critique from Carrie Ann Inaba. She had the audacity to say they added too much comedy to their routine. "The Pink Panther" is a comedy. Beyonce was in its remake from 2006 starring Steve Martin. Thankfully Len Goodman saved the night by chastising Carrie for her inaccuracies. He loved it all as so did Bruno. Unfortunately they did not get any deserving 10s. Once again they are the bridesmaids coming in second. 26
