'Dancing With the Stars' Season 12 Episode 2 Recap: 'Quicksteps, Jives and Smooches'

Jenna de Salea
So last night it was do or die, because now couples are getting voted off for REAL this week! After last week's Cha-cha-cha and Foxtrot, the couples each had another dance to add to their scores and redeem themselves before the first vote off. And like last week we had a lot of surprises again! Let's take a look at the highlights...

Big Winners
Chris Jericho and Cheryl Burke
- You have to give pro Cheryl Burke some serious credit because girlfriend is a 'turn an athlete into a dancer' specialist, and last night a completely different Chris Jericho emerged and they gave us one of the best dances of the night with their Quickstep.

- Hines Ward and Kym Johnson
Mr. Ward finally found his rhythm and gave a great performance this week that made up for a sort of flat debut last week. He and Kym are very well matched, and with the other contenders, this should be more than a little interesting as the weeks go on. They too tied the leader board with Chris Jericho and Romeo.

- Romeo and Chelsie Hightower
Speaking of Lil' Romeo, he seems to be relaxing and settling into dancing, not so afraid of being looked at like a sissy anymore. I still think that as time goes on more of the 'smooth classical' dances might become an issue because Romeo's a bit flat footed, but if he keeps improving like he did from last week, he might be able to waltz as well as anything.

The Losers
- Mike Catherwood and Lacey Schwimmer
Proving that chemistry and sexual tension can't cure horrible dancing, Mike and Lacey did a little better this week, but it's still a mess and Mike could very well see himself out of the competition tonight. Not even Dr. Drew in the audience cheering on his 'Loveline' cohost is going to save him, I think. Dancing just isn't Psycho Mike's thing...

- Wendy Williams and Tony Dovolani
I was really hoping Wendy would make a huge comeback after last week's disaster because I wanted to believe it was just nerves that made that happen. But, like Psycho Mike, Wendy just isn't a dancer and can't seem to get out of her own head. I still think she's safe this week because she has a big fan base, but she won't last much longer.

The Middle
Unfortunately this early in the competition, if you aren't great or horrible you land somewhere in the middle. Sure you were there, but there isn't much to say about your dance. Last night's middle saw the stars of last week, Kendra Wilkinson, Ralph Macchio, and Kirstie Alley kind of slide a bit this week. Kirstie would have won the night had she not flubbed the last steps and ran out of gas during her quickstep. The kiss with Maks was kinda weird and cute at the same time.

Ralph Macchio was straight up boring, but not bad, and Kendra had a bit of a problem with posture, choreography and music. The song was just horrible, and you can't get excited about a dance, no matter how good the person is, if the song is simply horrible.

Petra Nemcova and Sugar Ray Leonard are going to be safe. I just think Sugar Ray is the cutest and Len Goodman needs to quit picking on him, and I'm also wondering why there is so much love from the judges for Petra. She's ok, but she doesn't do a whole lot except stand there and smile.

Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas did some kind of avant garde 'A Clockwork Orange' thing that was mostly strange, but not memorable in any way. She's in danger of being voted off pretty soon if they don't step up their game a little bit. They should be on the top of the leader board with his creativity and her natural ability.

There we have it for now... I think tonight we say 'adios,' to Mike Catherwood. What do you think? Who was the best of the bunch and who's going home this week?
