In addition to the routine they learned this week the competitors had to compete in an instant dance competition. Below is a recap and review of both dances and scores.
(For a quick look at tonight's leaderboard page through to the end of the article.)
Chelsea Kane & Mark Ballas - waltz
Finally, Chelsea was back to her peak performance. She danced like a Disney princess again. It has been a while since we have seen her at her best because of Mark's unusual choreography. That has consistently affected their score negatively. Len, especially, doesn't like innovation.
Chelsea and Mark scored 29 on their first dance, making them the first couple to get two tens this season.
Hines Ward & Kym Johnson - foxtrot
The foxtrot performed by Hines and Kym was not as dynamic as most of Hine's dances have been in the past. Hines, however, always moves across the floor with grace and ease. The dance was a crowd and judge pleaser.
Hines is a real contender to win the championship for season 12 of "Dancing with the Stars."
Hines and Kym scored 28, with one 10 from Bruno.
Romeo & Chelsie Hightower - tango
Romeo and Chelsie performed a fast-paced, exciting tango. It looked like Chelsie's intensity overpowered Romeo's, but they both danced with energy. The judges gave them marvelous reviews. Romeo is a great dancer, but this particular dance wasn't that impressive to me.
Romeo and Chelsie scored 27.
Ralph Macchio & Karina Smirnoff - Viennese Waltz
Ralph had an injury this week that took him and Ralph out of practice for most of the week. I watched their dance holding my breath, afraid that Ralph's injury might flair up during the dance. It did not, and he and Karina danced a beautiful Viennese Waltz. It was amazing considering his injury.
Ralph and Karina scored 25.
Kirstie Alley & Maksim Chmerkovskiy - tango
After a disappointing performance last week Kirstie and Maks came out with a strong and sassy tango. It was very dramatic and very good, filled with passion and intensity.
Kirstie and Maks scored 28.
"DWTS" Instant Dance Competition May 9, 2011
Following their first performance the teams were given music for a second dance to be performed within 20 to 30 minutes. This is the second season that "Dancing with the Stars" has included the instant dance competition, and it really separates the dancers from the pretenders. The couples learned a dance during the week but had no idea what music they would be dancing to until after their first performance. With little time to prepare the pressure was on.
Chelsea Kane & Mark Ballas - salsa
Chelsea and Mark danced a hot salsa with lots of difficult moves. They scored a 26.
Hines Ward & Kym Johnson - jive
Judging from rehearsals Hines could have been in trouble with the instant jive, but he pulled it off and had a good time doing it. Hines and Kym scored 26.
Romeo & Chelsie Hightower - salsa
Romeo and Chelsie went to a salsa club to prepare for the salsa instant dance. In the competition they did a good job, enjoyed the dance and scored 25.
Ralph Macchio & Karina Smirnoff - cha cha cha
With absolutely no practice time for the cha cha, because of Ralph's injury, they went into the dance blind. It affected their performance. It wasn't as sharp and lacked a lot of the hip action necessary for the cha cha cha. They scored 21.
Kirstie Alley & Maksim Chmerkovskiy - salsa
Kirstie and Maks were energetic, but they had a very difficult song to dance to. It was difficult for them to dance to the beat. Kirstie and Maks scored 25.
"DWTS" Scores from the leaderboard, May 9 , 2011.
This week's leaderboard reflects a combined score including the couples' weekly dance and their instant dance competition scores.
Chelsea Kane & Mark Ballas - 55.
Hines Ward & Kym Johnson - 54.
Kirstie Alley & Maksim Chmerkovskiy - 53.
Romeo & Chelsie Hightower - 52.
Ralph Macchio & Karina Smirnoff - 46.

Post a CommentI can't figure out why Hines and Kym are always getting such high scores. Don't get me wrong, they're very entertaining... but in terms of actual dance ability/technical skill, I don't think he's one of the best on there. I'd probably pick Chelsea as being the most impressive contestant thus far.
Great review... :o)
Perfect recap. I've been out of the loop lately!
nice review.
