Dandruff: A Primer on the Causes and Natural Remedies

Jessica Pestka
Dandruff is a common issue that can be not only annoying but embarrassing. Dandruff is currently thought to be the result of an over growth of the yeast-like fungus called malassezia which is present on the scalp. Poor nutrition, over-use of styling products, illness, medications, hormones and stress may all intensify dandruff symptoms. Although there are many dandruff remedies available over the counter they do not always work and can sometimes irritate the scalp. The following is a collection of some of the most popular and helpful natural remedies for dandruff.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil shampoos such as Jason Tea Tree shampoo or Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo are an effective method for the treatment of dandruff. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic that can unclog follicles and soothe dandruff symptoms. Use a shampoo containing tea tree oil daily for the treatment and prevention of dandruff.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar has been used for centuries for the treatment of scalp conditions including dandruff. To treat the scalp with this inexpensive natural remedy combine equal parts apple cider vinegar with water (white vinegar may be substituted for cider vinegar, if desired). Rinse the scalp ad hair with the cider/water mixture 2 to 3 times a week prior to shampooing. This is a great remedy for individuals with oily hair or those who use styling products as it helps reduce build-up on the hair and scalp.

Sage-Rosemary Rinse

Herbalists recommend this easy to prepare rinse for the prevention and reduction of dandruff symptoms. To make a sage-rosemary rinse soak 1 once of dried sage and 1 ounce of rosemary in water for 24 hours. This rinse can be used daily after shampooing the hair.

Aloe Vera

Place commercially prepared or fresh aloe vera gel on the scalp and leave on for at least 20 minutes. Rinse scalp in warm water and repeat treatment until dandruff is gone. Repeat weekly for dandruff prevention.

Hot Oil Therapy

This is not only my personal favorite dandruff treatment it is also a calming indulgence when coupled with a bubble bath. Massage warm olive oil or almond oil on scalp once a week. Leave oil on for at least 5 minutes and rinse in cool water.

Dietary Supplements

A variety of supplements are recommended to help alleviate the common causes of dandruff. The B vitamins are necessary for healthy hair and vitamin A may help alleviate a dry scalp. Other supplements to consider are selenium and vitamin C for their anti-oxidant properties and primrose oil, fish oil or flax seed oil for their ability to relieve inflammation and dryness.
