Dangerous Animals in Louisiana- Alligators
According to the Louisiana Alligator Council there are over one million alligators in the state. Alligators like swamps, rivers, lakes or wherever they can have an adequate habitat. While they are more likely to eat your poodle, Alligators have certainly been known to attack humans. They are particularly dangerous to children who may not understand the danger and may look like a good meal for the big reptiles.
Dangerous Animals in Louisiana- Bears
There is a small (threatened) population of Black Bears and Louisiana Black Bears in the state. The species of bears that live in Louisiana are not usually aggressive but can be dangerous if startled. And of course mother bears are often very dangerous when they feel their cubs are in danger. Coyotes seldom attack humans but attacks do occur. Coyotes do some good in controlling vermin and helping to keep the deer in check. However Coyotes are not dogs and you can't expect them to act like one. Rabies can be a concern with Coyotes as well. If you see a Coyote out in the daylight it is sick, injured or starving. Any of these conditions are prime to cause an attack on humans.
Dangerous Animals in Louisiana- Venomous Snakes
Louisiana has several varieties of venomous snakes to watch out for. The Eastern Coral Snake, Texas Coral Snake, Copperhead, Western Cottonmouth, Western Pygmy Rattlesnake, and the Eastern Diamondback and Canebrake Rattlesnakes can all be found in Louisiana. However snakes are not evil as some people think and would much rather run and hide from, than attack a human.
