Dangerous Places in Lagos You Should Avoid at Night

Chapati
Lagos, like any other big city can be pretty dangerous at night. There are certain places that are simply no go areas after dark, because people who go there sometimes do not live to tell the tale. Here are some places in Lagos that should be avoided (by all means) at night:

Local Markets

The local market should be avoided at night because the market is widely known as the home to a number of Lagos touts and street urchins. They will be more than happy to rob, rape & assault you. The Lagos state government has tried their best to rid the markets of these low lives, but all their efforts have been in vain. Walking within the perimeter of the market at night should be avoided as much as possible.

Under The Bridge

Never walk under a major bridge! Pedestrian bridges are still okay to walk under late at night, but a major overpass should be strictly avoided. Under the bridge is mostly home to street pick-pockets, molesters, drug addicts, touts, runaways and ritual murderers. You do not want to be found under a major Lagos bridge at night. A couple of years back, a lady was rescued from the hands of a ritual murderer/molester, from guess where? Yup! Under a bridge, situated somewhere on the Lagos mainland, this story made headlines for weeks.

Deserted Streets

Deserted streets at night are often the targets of thieves and ritual killers; because they know that no one will come to the recue of their victim. Many people have been dispossessed of their cars, money etc along lonely streets.

Lagos Bar Beach

This beach is quite dangerous at night and many people have complaints about the place even during the day. The place is filled with drug addicts, thieves and prostitutes at night; only one side of the beach is protected by the police and the other side is left to the touts to rule over at night. These criminals have no problem with rough handling, molesting and even throwing you into the water if the need arises. The best thing is never to walk on the bad side of the beach at night (and during the day too). The Lagos state government has been spending a lot of money to make the beach a safe haven to all, but these criminals have done nothing but frustrate the efforts of the state government.

Where To Stay At Night

The best place should be your own home, but if something happens and you are unable to get home on time (before the stroke of midnight), your best bet is to go back to where you were coming from, but if that is not possible; go to either a police station or a church and spend the night there. Because it is better to be uncomfortable on a police chair or church pew than to be robbed, rapped or assaulted by society rejects. Sometimes circumstances are way beyond our control, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
