In an attempt to lose weight and get back into shape, many people are turning to liposuction. Liposuction is a medical procedure that involves removing excess fat from different parts of the body. The surgery can also be used to re-contour parts of the body as a means to improve body shape. It is commonly used to remove fat deposits from the body that do not respond to diet and exercise. As with any surgery, there are dangers involved with liposuction.
The dangers associated with liposuction increase with the amount of fat that is removed. One of the dangers involves getting an infection. An infection can occur with any type of surgery. Some physicians may prescribe antibiotics to prevent these kinds of dangers. Even if the physician does not prescribe an antibiotic, make sure to keep the wound clean to avoid infection.
Another danger includes development of embolism. This can occur anytime fat enters the blood through blood vessels that have been ruptured. This is one of the dangers because fat could be trapped in the blood vessels, collect in lungs, or travel to the brain. If you experience difficulty breathing after receiving liposuction, seek medical attention immediately.
Other dangers can occur because of an imbalance in fluids that occurs when the fat tissue is removed. Not only does fat tissue contain a lot of liquid, the physician may inject additional fluid into the body during liposuction, contributing to the risk. The dangers of fluid imbalance can lead to heart, lungs, and kidney problems.
Some dangers of liposuction have led to fatalities. Before receiving liposuction, discuss the dangers and risk factors with your physician to make sure the procedure is right for you.
