First of all, research shows that when the paraffin melts, it sets off chemical reactions that are emitted into the air you breathe. These chemicals consist of carcinogens that do not burn healthy. The American Chemical Society states that when burned, paraffin candles emit toluene, benzene, and other toxins that are linked to health issues such as asthma, eczema and cancer.
Another problem with a paraffin candle is the way in which they burn. They tend to burn slowly, releasing the chemicals over a long period of time. usually the candles are used in an enclosed space so their is no ventilation. This results in the toxic fumes being loaded into one room or space.
Some researches state that homes with an asthmatic, someone with emphysema, or breathing problems, should not have paraffin candles. Others go as far as to say no one should use them due to the unknown dangers of what actually you breathe in when using a paraffin candle.
In addition, most paraffin candles use metal wicks to burn. This metal is usually zinc , which released hazardous toxins into the environment as the candle burns. Hemp or clothe wicks are preferred, but usually are not found in paraffin candles.
Soy candles are an alternate choice for people concerned about issues with paraffin candles. They not only burn more efficiently, but the wicks are usually made of hemp or cloth. Soy candles are cutting a wide path into the traditional candle market, but the cost of these candles are rather expensive. Some people state that there is no price on health, so the benefits of soy candles far outweigh the costs.
As for myself, I am only an occasional candle user. If I used them on a regular basis, I might be a bit concerned. But until then, I will continue to use my old fashioned paraffin wax candles to distress my life. However, researchers have brought up some important points, so I will continue to follow the research on the use and dangers of paraffin wax candles.
