By preparing for the worst, you can address these issues in advance that could effect your overall happiness in a new home. You will want to check out this list and be aware of each danger before you commit to purchasing a home you will have to live in for years to come.
1. Who lives in the subdivision or adjacent communities? Always check the Missouri Sex Offender Registry if you have small children. This is at the top of my list because everyone should be aware of the potential of living near a predator. Especially if you have small children or you are a single mother. I am not suggesting you don't buy a home that you are in love with just because you live within a mile of a convicted sex offender. However, you want to be aware of your surroundings and educate your children about areas that need to be avoided or people they need to be aware of should an incident occur in your area.
2. Does your subdivision have adequate sidewalks? If your street is a drive through community or you live on a main road, you will want to consider if sidewalks are important to you. Children waiting for a bus or walking to a bus stop might require sidewalks for safety. Or if you have a dog you walk on a regular basis or someone in your family is a runner.
3. Are there adequate streetlights? Lighting might not seem important until you are visiting a neighbors house late one night or your kids are out trick or treating. A safe neighborhood has adequate lighting.
4. Are bus stops convenient for children without having to cross major roadways or stand in an area of potential danger? Check with your school district to ensure your child's bus stop doesn't require them to cross a major intersection or wait on a busy road with no sidewalks. Sometimes you can get the stop changed by writing a letter, but not always.
