Danny Gokey Sings 'What Hurts the Most' by Rascal Flatts

Kim Keason
Danny Gokey returned to Los Angeles in time for Tuesday night's American Idol show in order to perform Rascal Flatt's hit song What Hurts the Most. Danny flew to Milwaukee over the weekend to attend his grandfather's funeral. The death of Danny Gokey's grandfather is the second tragedy in less than a year for this American Idol front runner.

Tuesday night's American Idol song theme left the performers' song choices wide open. The theme was the most popular downloads on iTunes.

With less rehearsal time then the other American Idol contestants Danny's performance shined. He had an impressive stage presence wearing a black jacket and standing behind the microphone stand. With the microphone stand in front of him, Danny could focus on his vocals without having to worry about being an energetic performer. He still effortlessly accomplished an energizing performance.

What Hurts the Most is a powerful and heartfelt song to begin with. Danny started the first verse a little rushed. He seemed to plow through it in order to get to the refrain where he could let his voice loose. Once he hit the refrain his vocal range went off the chart.

Danny Gokey's voice is unique and sensual. His goal for this performance was to "pull out emotion" and he succeeded. I have not heard a more emotionally charged performance this season. He has the talent to make it through to the final three in the American Idol finale.

Did the passing of Danny Gokey's grandfather affect his performance? I do not see how any loss could not affect a person's entire life. In Danny's case it may have pulled out extra emotion for his rendition of Rascal Flatt's What Hurts the Most.

Opponents of Danny Gokey have been claiming that the only reason he is still an American Idol favorite is because of his personal tragedies. I can guarantee that if the man could not sing, it would not matter what had happened in his life.

This author's thoughts and prayers go out to the Gokey family.

sounds good but I don't want American Idol... thanks for covering it.

Yeah, this was his best. Frankly, Idol does seem to give a little more airtime to people who have sad stories. We never saw Kris' happy wedding during auditions, did we? But I don't think any of that would be the contestants' faults. Danny is the real deal.

I'm rooting for him to win. His song last night gave me chills and I got a bit misty eyed. His talent has affected me that way since the first time I heard him.
