Dark Void Reviewed!

Does This Game Fly High? or Come Crashing Down?

Joshua Benoit
2010 should be a promising year with upcoming video game releases. The previews for Dark Void looked promising, letting you fly in your jet pack all over the world and battle enemies. Sadly the fun was sucked out for the most part and this was turned into a mediocre title. Enter William Augustus Grey, Will to you. On a routine cargo trip his plane crashes in the Bermuda Triangle causing you and your female cohort to be teleported to a strange universe called the Dark Void. The "watchers" control the universe here and are some sort of alien beings, the humans you find are called the "survivors". None of the games plot points are elaborated on enough to make any sense and the whole game suffers from that, along with poor game play and graphics, read on.

Graphics:
Most of the visuals in Dark Void were decent at best. Everything looked pretty bland and really the only thing that did look good was flying around, mostly because you were traveling fast and the scenery kind of blurred by. For the capabilities of the newer consoles and high end PCs out there this is a major flaw. People want their games to be pretty and this one clearly is not. The characters, the textures and the environment are all low resolution which means getting up close and personal really shows how ugly the game is. The environment has a lifelessness to it that would turn off the oldest of gamers and that hits this game hard.

Game play:
The graphics is like a final package to a game and not really a deciding factor. Many great games of our time has had mediocre graphics but stellar game play. This game is not one of them. The missions are divided up into on foot and aerial missions. The aerial missions to me are the worst since its full of awkwardness. The controls are sub par and makes taking to the sky like carrying your grandma on your back through the woods. Not so much fun. The on foot missions were better but still average. There is no lock on button which can be a hassle. The enemies all act like there sole mission is to charge you. No variety in that is there? Mnay of the times you can ditch your weapon altogether and just melee the mobs to death. This proves to be almost as effective as the shooting. So all in all its not an amazing game to play. Its playable but that is about it.

Longevity:
The game took me around 6 hours to complete on normal difficulty settings. Something that disappointed yet relieved me. The game dragged on a certain parts so completing it was good. Not really any replay value unless you want to unlock all of the achievements that Dark Void offers.

Overall, you may want to wait for this game to go to bargain bins if you play it at all. If you're really bored I would suggest a rental in the best case.
