Each race starts with different base stats and equipment requirements. Vampires are the strongest characters over all and have no need for weapons as they fight. Slayers on the other hand require strong equipment to make up for their below average stats. Ousters are in the middle of the road with average stats and requiring weapons to improve them.
The three different races gain EXP and loot rewards differently. Slayers will be rewarded for simply attacking a monster and get the most money for selling their skulls to merchants. Vampires need to suck a monster's blood to get full experience but they get rare drops more frequently. Finally, Ousters get the most EXP overall, but they need to kill the monster themselves to earn it.
Darkeden offers many opportunities to power level for eager gamers. It starts as simply as equipping the highest rank of weapon you have for a percentage increase. Hunting monsters at night when they are stronger is another way to boost EXP. The best method though is to form parties to increase the EXP gained for all members, especially if they stay close together and use skills instead of simply hacking away.
One of the most interesting aspects of Darkeden is the ability to change races between Slayers and Vampires. If a Slayer is bitten by a Vampire, they will become one if they do not reach a healer in time. Similarly, Vampires can be purified into Slayers by healers. Changing races will reset your level to 1 and cause all of your items to become unequipped and completely wipe out your gold reserves. Reverting back to your original race will restore your level to what it was before the change.
Pets are useful when hunting to help you collect loot. Putting out a piece of meat will attract wild wolfdog pups that you can leash and then raise. Keep them well fed or they will die. You can enchant their leashes at level10 and 49 to increase their effectiveness. Starting at level 40, players can also have a race-specific battle pet to accompany them. Slayers command tiny Centeruo tanks, Vampires have Stirge bats, and Ousters are assisted by soul sucking Pixies.
