This is why I hate the player's unions.
If you read anything I write you know that I rail and rant about this frequently. I will continue to shout about this as long as I live. If professional teams could lower the salary of an underperforming player I would have no qualms about this. Say, Joe Schmo signs a 4 year, 20 million dollar deal and after year two his talent has markedly declined, his team can go to him and work out a compensation package that takes into account the decline in talent.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS HAPPEN.
Please tell me if I am wrong about this. I would be more than happy for someone to say that this happens all the time and I have just missed it for the past 15 years. It is now very normal for players to be able to ask for more money in the middle of a valid and binding contract. That is completely unfair until teams and owners can cut the pay of an underperforming player during the middle of a valid and binding contract.
The player's unions would never allow something like that too happen. I just wish that as fans we would do more to hold players accountable to everyday norms.
