Dassant Classic Breakfast Bread Baking Mixes

A Delicious Treat

Annette Robbins
Whenever I shop at a discount or Dollar store, I stroll down the food aisles to find unusual and interesting food items that often are not stocked in the mainstream grocery stores and supermarkets. As I grow older, I find I am more adventurous and willing to expand my food palate by trying foods from other countries that are totally unfamiliar to my taste buds. Perhaps such mellowing comes with age and maturity and is yet another rite of passage. It is amazing to note the variety and scope of unusual ethnic food products from all over the world. They seem to call out "try me and you may like it". On a recent visit to the Odd Lot store in East Point, Georgia, I was drawn to the baking goods section of the shelf. It featured boxes of Dassant Classics Breakfast Bread baking mix. The available flavors in stock were Applesauce or Pumpkin Breakfast Bread baking mix. I had not previously heard or seen advertisement for this product so as I stood in the aisle reading the nutrition panel and baking directions

Easy to bake, excellent taste

I was impressed by the simplicity of its ingredients with apparently no complex, hard to pronounce names of strange ingredients added. The necessary ingredients that needed to be added were eggs, oil and applesauce. That seemed simple enough so I decided to purchase the Applesauce Breakfast Bread flavor and home I went, eager to try out my new found treat. I am pleased to report that the Dassant Classics Applesauce Breakfast Bread was delicious, flavorful and more than lived up to its claims of being flavorful and aromatic. As the baking aroma filled the apartment, I became nostalgic of times past when my mother and grandmother baked. I admit that I regressed to a being a little girl and licked the spoon with the residual batter. The batter was that good! I was quite pleased with the texture, taste and consistency of the Applesauce Bread. It lives up to the company's claim that it is delicately spiced bread that will wake your taste buds and add something special to any meal". Quite frankly, the Applesauce Bread could be served as a bread or cake because it is not too sweet nor is it too tart to be served as a cake. Although the directions state baking the batter in a standard 9x5 loaf pan, I have already fast forwarded ahead in my thoughts to the fall and holiday season and intend to make mini loaves of the Dassant Applesauce and Pumpkin Bread to give as gifts to family and friends. Already, I can visualize the cakes in colorfully wrapped and beribboned packages being received with utter surprise and delight by their recipients. My daughter so enjoyed the Applesauce Bread that I made her one for her wedding anniversary for which she was graciously thankful. I would not hesitate to serve this baked item to company or family.

Available Flavors

In researching the product more thoroughly, I find that the baking mix is available in a variety of flavors including Danish cinnamon cake, French lemon cake and other choices in the Specialty premium mixes category. Seasonal mix flavors include French Cranberry Orange Cake Muffins mix and English Gingerbread Cake & Cookie mix as well as other flavors that are listed on the www.Dassant.com website.

Serving Suggestions

As breakfast bread, serve with tea, coffee, milk or juice
Put fruit on top or serve with ice cream
Warm the bread in the microwave before eating to enliven the taste
Slice cake and place in individual baggies to freeze for future use. Can be thawed when ready.

More information

Although I have not seen Dassant Classic Breakfast Bread baking mixes in the local supermarkets, you do not have to stockpile the product for fear of not being able to purchase the mix. If you view the website www.Dassant.com you will find information about the available flavors and the other products that can be ordered on line. At Odd-Lot, I paid $1.50 for a 16 oz box of the baking mix which is reasonably priced considering the quality and taste. The baking mix is distributed by North West Specialty Baking Mixes, Ltd in Portland, Oregon.

I am definitely a returning customer for Dassant Breakfast Breads and will purchase on line if it becomes unavailable in the stores. For a wholesome, delicious and flavorful breakfast bread/cake, I recommend Dassant Breakfast Bread Baking Mix. It has passed the taste test and has earned my vote of confidence!

    I cannot resist buying
Dassant Bread/Cake Mixes when locating them in area stores...
    one of the reasons is
the low fat ingredients with no trans fat included.
    Another reason is the
    challenge of adding
    ingredients to the
original recipe to make it more special.
My latest innovation was to use a Dassant
    Applesauce Bread mix
    and added the following ingredients.
To the bread mix I added 4 white of eggs,
    l/4 cup of olive oil,
l box of fat free vanilla pudding mix, l
    jar of Side Hill Farm
Maple Cramberry Drizzle and included warm water to fill the empty jar, 1/4
    cup of
chopped nuts and 1/2 cup of semi sweet chocolate chips. Blended all of the ingredients together scraping the sides constantly for 30 seconds. Spray a tube pan with baking spray
    with flour and spread
    mix evenly in pan.
    Bake in 350 degree F
oven for 50 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in
center comes out clean. Drizzle white
    icing on top or shake
    powdered sugar on top.
    The end result is more
