Date rape victims are usually more traumatized since they feel guilty and think they are to blame for what happened. Of course, this is not true. Rape is a serious crime that nobody deserves.
Believe it or not, in such cases, it is you who have the power. Following the trite but still true expression "prevention is better than cure," you can avoid being assaulted by any person. This is still the best defense against any crime, so take note of the following precautions:
1. As much as possible, only date someone you really know. Going out with casual or chance acquaintances increases the risk of date rape because you are not sure of his background and expectations. This is not to say you should avoid blind dates altogether. Just make sure someone you trust can vouch for him.
2. Going out in groups is also recommended, especially if this is your first date with the guy. However, if you prefer to be alone, choose public places, such as the mall, a basketball game, or a restaurant. Being in secluded areas, including his room, with someone you do not know very well is not wise.
3. Let your date knows you have told someone where you are. As soon as you are with the guy, call a friend or a family member and casually inform them on your current whereabouts. This way, the guy will think twice of doing something not right.
4. Do not forget to bring your own money. Though chivalry is still sweet and guys usually pick the tab, having cash in your pocket may come in handy especially when things turn ugly.
5. Avoid alcohol and drugs. Rapists usually use these to lower a woman's resistance, both physically and mentally. Also, be cautious in leaving your drinks at the table with your date, such as when you go to the ladies' room, because he might put drugs to it to make you vulnerable.
6. Say no, and make sure your date knows you mean it. In court hearings, a rape suspect usually reasons out that he has the woman's consent. "Did you say no," a defense lawyer would often ask to prove that the girl did not resist although she did.
Above all, always trust your instincts because you are usually right. If you feel that there is something wrong, believe it and end the date as soon as possible. Most rape victims regret not trusting their gut feelings.
