Daughterhood Blues

A Father's Day Poem

Amanda R. Roby
Give me back my Daddy, when he swung me on his shoulders,

Swung me through the bad times, too, when he swung me on his shoulders.

Give me back my Daddy, the one with all the answers.

Now I'm fully grown and wed, and looking back at all those years.

Now that I'm fully grown and wed, it's time to look back at those years,

Give me back my Daddy, who dried up all my tears.

Why does time pass so quickly, now I'm married and grown up?

I left my mother and my father and the land where I grew up.

Left my Mama and my Daddy and the land where I grew up.

Give me back my childhood, and I'll never grow a day.

I've decided that my childhood has never grown a day.

And when I'm old and gray, I'll be wishing for my Daddy,

Saying, "Give me back my Daddy, now that I'm old and gray."

Time will be a boulder, to weigh me down inside,

But on my Daddy's shoulders, don't matter that I'm the bride,

'Cause time will be a boulder, even now that I'm the bride.

You may give me back my Mama, you may give me back the years,

But please give me back my Daddy, to dry up all my tears.

Give me back my Daddy, who dried up all my tears.
