Dave Koz - A Great Saxophonist and Jazz Musician

Shawn Thomas
Dave Koz will soon be once again on tour for his Dave Koz and Friends Smooth Jazz Christmas. The tour kicks off a few days after Thanksgiving and will be ongoing until right before Christmas. For those not familiar with Dave Koz, he is a popular saxophonist. He most frequently plays soprano or alto, which are the smaller saxophones. Sometimes he plays tenor and baritone which are the larger saxophones.

As a saxophone player myself, I love the sound of a saxophone. I play the tenor and have done so since I was in fourth grade.

Dave Koz got his start on the piano. It turned to the saxophone when his brother's band needed a saxophone player. In order to be able to play in the band he needed to learn. He eventually ended up continuing in high school and college. After graduating he pursued a solo music career.

Well it turned out that Dave was very good at the saxophone. His career took off in the early 1990's and he has remained strong on the scene ever since.

Dave also has been a radio host for numerous years. He now hosts a syndicated afternoon show which airs on smooth jazz stations across the U.S.

He is most popular for the song "You Make Me Smile" but has continued to have hits ever since. He has performed for numerous years on Dave Koz & Friends Jazz Cruises and Smooth Jazz Christmas Concerts. Both of these events are big successes. I have never been on a cruise but have been to the Christmas concert.

The Christmas concert is the most memorable concert I have been to. Many popular jazz musicians make appearances and perform solos with Dave. Dave is a powerhouse himself but when you get him with other jazz musicians the performance becomes magnifying.

The concert I saw him at was at the Chicago Theatre a week or so before Christmas several years ago. The show was sold out and the crowd was going crazy. There was so much excitement in the room. Dave played a wide range of his hits. In addition he played numerous popular Christmas favorites. The stage had numerous Christmas decorations.

I recommend that anyone who is not familiar with Dave Koz listen to his music. You can go on youtube and find old music videos and songs. His website also plays snippets of many of his most famous songs. I encourage anyone looking to have a magical holiday season to attend the Dave Koz and Friends Smooth Jazz Christmas.

Shawn, nice piece! I am a trumpet player and I have never recognized Dave for a great saxophone player, that is to say I was never able to pick him out. A beautiful tone, I enjoyed looking into some of his work!
