The funniest skit of the night was Andy Samberg as Jack Johnson, hosting The Mellow Show. Johnson's guests/co-hosts for the evening show included Dave Matthews (played by Bill Hader) and Jason Mraz (played by host Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Johnson absent mindedly opined to the audience for the safe return of his missing pets; all of whom were skilled in the mastery of rolling joints. There was also the story of Johnson's scandalous gecko who he warned "If you find him you should not buy weed from him as it's laced with PCP."
However the most fun part of the skit came when musical guest Dave Matthews made an appearance as aged metal head, former Black Sabbath front man, and current reality television show star Ozzy Osbourne. Dave Matthews is a charming man but when Dave Matthews comes out, playing another, slightly senile musician, as a different actor sits next to him, playing Dave Matthews, the real musician can have a little bit of fun with himself. When Dave as Ozzy gets up and sings his current rendition of the Sabbath classic "Iron Man," as "I Am Tired," it was a real treat.
Not so for Johnson, Mraz, and Hader as Matthews. They all sort of recoiled in horror from Ozzy's ghastly performance; with Johnson saying "That was so not mellow. I'm pretty sure you scared Dave Matthews."
When the real world is able to poke fun at itself, it's the best kind of television. Al Gore had his moment a little later on when he said to Seth Myers on "Weekend Update," "Barack Obama has a mandate from the people. He won the POPULAR VOTE." Myers snickered, adding that Obama also won the Electoral College vote to which Gore bitterly replied, "I'm a popular vote guy, myself." But I still think that Dave Matthews takes the cake in this week's episode of Saturday Night Live. Al Gore got out in front of millions of people and gave speeches every day for years; when you're able to step out from behind the guitar and microphone and do something different, it deserves to be commended.
