Dave Treen, Former Governor of Louisiana Dead at 81

Karen Gros
Former Governor Dave Treen passed away early this morning due to respiratory complications. Treen was 81 years old. Treen's tenure as Governor was from 1980 to 1984.

He was a republican and was a man that was very down to earth, unlike some of our other governors of the State. He wasn't a show-off nor was he a big talker. He was a quiet governor who took care of business in a business-like setting.

Treen made history in the State of Louisiana when he became the first republican congressman elected and later governor of Louisiana since the Reconstruction era.

While governor, Treen made education a priority and increased teacher pay by approximately 47%. He was instrumental in addressing Bobby Jindal, present governor of Louisiana to reduce the cuts to Education this past year.

Treen was also responsible for establishing the Department of Environmental Quality, a much needed department to regulate air quality and other environmental issues.

Treen succeeded former Governor Edwin Edwards in office. It was ironic that Edwards defeated Treen's run for re-election and even more ironic that Treen rallied for Edwards early release from prison after he was indicted and sentenced to prison on numerous charges. Edwards remains in prison as of today.

Flags have been ordered to fly at half mast by Governor Bobby Jindal, who made the following statement to the press today, ""Louisiana has lost a visionary leader and a tireless advocate for our state, with the passing of Governor Dave Treen."
