David Archuleta's Performance of 'America the Beautiful' is Soaring and Soulful at US Open Final

Although I was looking forward to the US Open women's final last night, I was even more pleasantly surprised to learn that David Archuleta would be performing before the match. Accompanied by a piano and the US Marine Corps Six Communications Battalion Brooklyn, New York. He sang while the Marine Corps unfolded the American flag over the tennis court.

The video of David Archuleta's American the Beautiful performance is available on YouTube.

While David Archuleta's voice is always beautiful, he sounds even more impressive live (and I was fortunate enough to have tickets to the US Open final). At his young age, David Archuleta knows how to convey the emotion of a song, especially fitting for this patriotic anthem. On American Idol, he was best-known for his ability to sing power ballads such as Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Angels, and When You Believe.

Yet it would be unfair to pigeon-hole David Archuleta as a power balladeer. His vocal strengths also come from the versatility of his voice. He has a voice that suits classical, gospel, pop, or R&B. His interpretation of America the Beautiful had an interesting soulful R&B quality, yet it would have worked accompanied by an orchestra, a gospel choir, or a band.

At the US Open, David Archuleta was accompanied by a single piano playing simple but powerful chords. It was a simple harmony, not too schmaltzy or overpowering. The piano accompanied could have worked equally well at the US Open final, in a Protestant church, or on a concert hall stage.

David Archuleta and Adam Lambert have demonstrated that one doesn't have to win American Idol to enjoy musical success. David Archuleta obviously enjoys a large following. Over at Arthur Ashe Stadium, I heard a mother scream "my daughter loves you!" Yet David Archuleta has a voice that appeals to many demographics, not just teenage girls.

In the wake of the anniversary of September 11, David Archuleta and the US Marine Corps Battalion moved many Americans to tears and patriotic pride. Although no American was playing in the US Open women's final, David Archuleta's soaring interpretation of America the Beautiful reminded fans why we love tennis and why we are proud to be American.

I always expect nothing but the very best from David. He is the only person I know of who can sing our patriotic songs exactly how they should be sung. So proud of him as a person and his voice is like no other. His Christmas CD will soar.

When David sings a patriotic song like America the Beautiful, you feel each word he sings like you had never heard the song before. Very impressed with his choice of verses to sing. Poignant and true for the times. Amazing vocal range and passion flowed from this performance.

Thank you for your wonderful article! I'm one of David's many adult fans and in this performance you can see just some of what draws fans of all ages to David Archuleta. But the most wonderful thing about David is that the beauty of his voice is more than matched by his heart. He is amazingly humble, honest, hard-working, charitable and kind to everyone. He loves his country and he feels honored to sing patriotic songs at public events. Proud to be a fan and I cannot wait for his Christmas album Oct 13.

still in love with this moving performance 2 days afterwards... david hit it out of the park, and he is one i hope enjoys years and years of smashing musical success. he's deserving, and does show that american idol gets it wrong most of the time. not a slam on the winner in his season, but how, after listening to this performance, could america get it so wrong, and he not win... no matter, he's on his way, no looking back. all the best david with your christmas album, and your next pop album.

David is gifted and a gift for everyone. When you follow him, you will find that his infectious goodness always shines through and you feel life is worth to live. He is such a positive role model. His singing always comes from his pure heart and this rendition of American The Beautiful is not an exception. What a rightful person to sing.

Yes, David sang that song really well. I hope he gets to sing more in these kinds of settings. You can tell he was tentative at first but quickly picked up and never looked back. The ending was quite amazing. He was pitch perfect.
