David Cook Wins American Idol Season 7

David Cook was crowned Season 7's American Idol; winning by 12 million votes despite Tuesday night's declaration by Simon Cowell that David Archuleta won each round of performances in the final competition. Prior to the announcement of the winner, Cowell apologized to Cook for his remarks the previous evening and further commented after watching a replay of the show, it was not as clear cut as he had suggested. Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson heartily agreed.

Cook was overcome with emotion when Ryan Seacrest announced he was the winner, but managed to deliver a nice performance of "Time of My Life", this season's winning single. During his performance, he graciously connected with David Archuleta, who politely took his loss and maintained his composure. He continued singing the new single as he made his way into the audience. He was obviously ecstatic with his victory.

I have been predicting for the last month a win for Archuleta and was quite confident I presumed correctly after Tuesday's competition. Obviously, I did not realize either the size or fortitude (or both) of Cook's fan base. In addition, during the star-studded two hour result show, I saw something in Cook that was not quite as clear during the competition on Tuesday. I have maintained David Cook has stronger stage presence than Archuleta, but it was very apparent this evening. Archuleta has made significant gains, but Cook was far more at ease and more secure controlling the stage. The arrogance I perceived in the past has softened. Although in my opinion, Archuleta does have the better vocal ability; Cook is much more the professional entertainer.

There truly are no losers on American Idol. If a contestant has talent and star potential he/she will be successful regardless of their ranking. In season two the runner-up, Clay Aiken, has been far more successful than the winner, Ruben Studdard. And of course in season four, the fourth place contest, Chris Daughtry, has a career that has far surpassed the three who placed ahead of him combined: Elliot Yamin, Katherine McPhee and Taylor Hicks. Archuleta's runner-up position won't harm his potential stardom.

For now, though, David Cook and his many fans whose votes brought him the title should revel in his win.
