David Hasselhoff Taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre by Paramedics

Baywatch heart-throb David Hasselhoff's public battle with alcoholism has been well documented in the tabloids over many years. It is sad to observe a great personality in such dire circumstances again. News sources, including RadarOnline and a Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman, have reported that David was taken to Cedars-Sinai medical center after a 911 call by his daughter Hayley. Paramedics arrived at an address in Encino at approximately 11.51 am to manage the situation

RadarOnline.com has confirmed that Hasselhoff is under 72-hour hold as medical personnel determine whether or not these health professionals can help. California state law allows a person in Hasslehoff's predicament to be placed on involuntary psychiatric hold in order to administer emergency medical help. Given these state-enforced provisions, Hasselhoff will continue to be monitored against his will until Tuesday or Wednesday.

David Hasselhoff was hospitalized in late September 2009 with alcohol poisoning after taping a season of America's Got Talent on which he is a judge. In November he appeared drunk while on presenter duties during the MTV Europe Music Awards.

One has to have compassion for him with his latest problem. He is obviously struggling and it is to be hoped he will receive the help he needs to become sober and stay that way. It is sad to see a television star of his distinction with a very serious alcohol issue to deal with.

Other famous alcoholics

Unfortunately, David is not the only celebrity to fall into the alcoholism trap. There are many more who have had or still have problems controlling their alcoholic intake:

Robbie Williams states he has not touched an alcoholic drink for 10 years.

Guitarist Richie Sambora, founding member of the internationally famous rock band Bon Jovi, was arrested in March 2008 by Laguna Beach, California, police officers after he was pulled over for weaving in traffic.

John Daly. PGA golfer is an admitted alcoholic with many alcohol-related crimes and incidents in his past.

Stephen King, world famous author has a long history of alcoholism but after a family intervention he got sober in the late 1980's and has remained sober since.

Larry Hagman received a liver transplant due to liver disease caused by excessive consumption of alcohol.

Elton John has kicked both alcohol and drug addictions.

Buzz Aldrin, Astronaut is another confessed alcoholic.

All these people died from the effects of alcohol - and they are just some:

John Barrymore - 29 May 1942, actor
George Best - 25 November 2005, football player
Richard Burton - 5 August 1984, actor

This list is not comprehensive, but it seems uncanny that most of them are from artistic backgrounds. Is there a link?

Don't become a victim of alcohol

Seek help if you need assistance with alcohol-related problems. Remember, alcoholism is an illness and many people recover with treatment and support from organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous. The first step is to admit you have a problem, then see your medical professional and go from there.

For those living with a person who has a problem with alcohol, Al-Anon and Al-a-Teen are there to help.
