David Hasselhoff Hospitalized for Drinking Again

Alcoholic David Hasselhoff Still in Denial Over His Drinking Problem

David Hasselhoff has been hospitalized again for his drinking. Unfortunately, it was his 17 year old daughter, Hayley, who had to take him to the hospital - again. David's ex-wife, and mother of his children, Pamela Bach Hasselhoff, also has alcohol problems and was jailed recently for a DUI, which violated her probation.

It should be noted that these two adults are 57 and 47 years old, respectively, and that it is their two teen children who are caring for them.

But, that is the thing about alcoholism. It not only steals the life of the alcoholic, but it also wrecks the lives of the loved ones who have to cope with their alcoholic family member. Double that if the family member is a parent.

As an adult child of an alcoholic father, I have done my own share of caring for an incapacitated adult when I was not emotionally prepared nor mature enough to understand the ramifications of such twisted parent/child dynamics.

Like most alcoholics, I'm certain that David Hasselhoff only sees the damage caused by his drinking in his own life. Self-absorption and emotional narcissism are at the core of alcoholism. Not to mention the eventual brain damage that occurs from years and years of alcohol abuse. The consequences reach far and wide.

There is a lot of shame involved in alcoholism. Of course, the alcoholic is consumed with it, which is why they drink to escape it. But, the children of alcoholics cannot. They are forced to assume the role of the parent in these relationships which then lays the foundation for a lifetime of shame, guilt and an eternal sense of incompetence that leaves you feeling that you will never be able measure up no matter how hard you try. This is the legacy an alcoholic parent will leave with their child.

Note to David Hasselhoff: Get your head out of your ass before it is too late.
