If you missed the Late Show with David Letterman last night on CBS, then you missed one of the most breathtaking revelations of Dave's career. On October 1, 2009, David Letterman revealed during the opening segment of his show that he has been the victim of an extortion. Namely, he received an unlabeled package instructing him to pay $2 million dollars to the extortionist or suffer the consequences of a career-shattering reveal.

The extortionist claimed to know and to reveal that David Letterman had previously had affairs with several members of the staff of the Late Show with David Letterman. If Dave did not pay the two million dollars then he would make the news public. Well, David immediately went to his lawyers and notified CBS and his family. His lawyers devised a scheme to actually pay the extortionist with a fake check for two millions dollars so as to be able to reveal who it was.

It was soon revealed through this clever trick that the extortionist was a fellow CBS employee working for the investigative show 48 Hours. His name is Robert J. Halderman, also known as Joe Halderman. Immediately upon finding the true identity of the suspect, the whole plot was revealed to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the suspect Robert J. Halderman was brought into custody!

Furthermore, David Letterman also sat in front of a grand jury and decided to admit his affairs and named them. Therefore, Joe Halderman's plot to extort Dave was illegal but backed with valid information.

David Letterman revealed all of this to his nationwide audience on his Thursday October 1, 2009 show in an attempt to dismiss rumors and try not to create an uproar against him. It may actually have been a smart move on his part because it does indeed calm the rumors and as Dave surely hopes, it will all pass smoothly. Recently, David Letterman has also been in the news due to the comments he made during a comedy segment about Sarah Palin and her daughters. Sarah Palin, the ex-governor of Alaska tried to create a media frenzy about the issue and even called for David Letterman to resign. Luckily for Dave, he used his humor and comedy to win that battle. Can he do it again, or will this legal battle become so public that Dave is forced to finally leave his seat? And if he does, will he come back at ten like his long time NBC counterpart?

Stay tuned.
