David Letterman in Hot Water; Willow and Bristol Palin Jokes Continues

Robert Dougherty
David Letterman and his jokes, whether they were about Willow Palin or Bristol Palin, continue to land David Letterman in hot water with Willow and Bristol's mother. What David Letterman said about Bristol Palin getting knocked up by A-Rod was one thing. But since Willow Palin was actually attending a Yankees game with Sarah Palin this week instead, David Letterman is being accused of encouraging underage rape, among other things.

Sarah Palin continued to try and stick up for Willow and Bristol by attacking David Letterman on the Today Show this morning. Palin did not buy Letterman's apology, or Letterman's claim that he was joking about Bristol Palin getting knocked up and not 14-year-old Willow.

Letterman is at least guilty of poor research and a poor choice of words. By not clearing up which daughter he was joking about, Letterman opened himself to a Palin attack on all fronts. But whether he was joking about Bristol or Willow Palin, he couldn't have won.

If Letterman went after Bristol, he might not have been accused of joking about underage sex and rape. But the accusations that Letterman has a double standard for going after Republican children, and not Democrat and Obama children, would have remained.

If David Letterman actually knew from the start that it was 14-year-old Willow in the Yankees audience and not Bristol, and made the joke about her getting with A-Rod anyway, then that's another matter. And thanks to Palin's latest media blitz, Letterman is paying for it even further.

Palin called Letterman's defense and claims that he was going after Bristol a "very convenient excuse" on Today this morning. However, Palin might also find herself in hot water from the other side, after a spokeswoman for her said that it would be "wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman."

The Palin family have already used Letterman's advanced age to further bash his jokes about teenagers having sex. Now, the other side has the easy attack line to accuse the Palins of calling David Letterman a sex offender.

Sarah Palin herself merely said to "take it however you want to take it" without really distancing herself from the suggestive comment. Palin similarly did not object too much to the negative insinuations her base made about President Obama during the election.

For now, it is David Letterman's negative insinuations that are still front and center, and are likely to remain that way for some time. With Palin refusing a invitation on The Late Show, choosing to go to other media outlets instead, Letterman now has the next move to respond back.

The double standard with this entire story is absurd. Letterman either knowingly or not joked about a 14 year old getting raped. This deserved an apology. This is not about keeping the story and attention going, this is about taking the opportunity to call letterman out on such a degrading and offensive joke. His explanation and lack of apology was unacceptable and came across as his way to legitimize such a heinous joke. Palin justly took a stand.

While I think Letterman was out of line (some jokes just deserve to be left alone), Palin isn't helping matters by continuing to keep it going. From a parental perspective, I'd complain or defend my children but only up to a point. After that, it could do more harm to them than good. Just my take.

Palin is just stupid...Letterman is a great guy. He is hardly a sex offender...Palin is just using her female gender as a weapon. Which in my opinion is totally obsurd. Letterman took a time out to explain and offer an olive branch if Palin wants to drag it on then she is obviously a stuck up beetch...If she ever becomes president america is in for some horrible times...
