David Letterman-Sarah Palin Late Night Feud Enters Next Phase

Robert Dougherty
David Letterman and Sarah Palin are an unlikely pairing, but David Letterman and Sarah Palin seem committed to becoming the next Late Night feud. First, David Letterman made tons of Sarah Palin jokes after her recent trip to New York. Next, Sarah Palin accused David Letterman of making rape jokes about her daughter. Late night, Letterman had to spend about eight minutes defending himself, finally inviting the Palins on Late Night. Letterman probably won't hold his breath for Sarah Palin to come on, so who knows where this new feud will go next.

The Letterman vs Palin debacle began when David Letterman made Sarah Palin the centerpiece of his Top 10 List Monday night, after she made a trip to New York City. Letterman's list was a hodgepodge of Sarah Palin jokes and slams against her, her politics, and her family.

The one that got the Palins riled up this time was a joke Letterman made about Bristol Palin getting "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez during the trip. In response, Sarah Palin went on Facebook to accuse Letterman of making jokes about rape.

Palin even used Letterman's age to attack him, saying it was "disgusting" for a 62-year-old to make comments about something raping a 14-year-old. However, the 14-year-old in the Palin family is Willow, and Letterman was talking about Bristol.

Nevertheless, Letterman spent much of the top of Wednesday night's show explaining himself, and stopping just short of apologizing for it. Although Letterman tried to backtrack to a point, guest Kathy Griffin had no such qualms, filling the Palin insult quota for the night.

David Letterman and Sarah Palin were naturally going to disagree about some things if they ever got together, given their different political stances. Palin has faced comparatively worse attacks from the late night comedic circuit, although her current objection is over Letterman's jokes about her daughter.

Palin's objection to that overshadowed the other big attack of Monday night, when Letterman said she had a "slutty flight-attendant look." For that, Letterman had no regrets.

Palin did ironically have time to send a taped greeting to another late night show, as she sent a greeting to the troops in the Colbert Report audience in Iraq last night. She got in a bit of hot water for that too last week, as a Twitter post about the occasion gave away that Colbert was going to Iraq a bit early.

In terms of late night feuds, the Letterman-Palin incident seems to have only done good for Letterman, given that he overtook Conan O'Brien in the ratings. But the feud still has to contend with Jon Stewart and Joe Scarborough's current battle over Starbucks sponsoring Morning Joe as the big late night feud of the moment.

Daves job? As an adult he should have the good sense and the balls to know when to say no. But he doesn't. He has to stoop to using other peoples children to try and get a laugh. I think he should travel to Anchorage and see how people up there feel about his comments. Now that would be funny! Letterman with a black eye!

You people are so angry... I mean really? You ever watch comedy central? Ever been to a comedians stand up show? Now there are a few clean ones out there and all. Guess what, the 200 people in the room laughed, are they all unamerican sicko's? Maybe, but atleast they have a sense of humor and are not so stuck on thier own political or moral hangups that they freak out whenever any public figure pushes one of thier buttons.

"It is Daves job. If they cant take the heat they should stay out of the spot light. It is a joke. Lighten up." Right, because if anyone joked about, oh, say the Obama daughters that way, the reaction wouldn't be the same, right?

Letterman's comments were over the top. I think Dave should apologize to Alex Rodriguez.

    Hey subtext, you're the moron.
Can't you come up with better insulting material on your own instead of repeating stale liberal hate talking points? Are you stumped?

Palin never coined that phrase regarding seeing Russia from AL, was shocked that little Katie C. couldn't come up with more relevant questions to ask a VP candidate. I'll add one for you to teethe on; more than one Bush doctine, Gibson got it wrong.
Your 'Alabama' comment shows you to be a bigot. If your ancestors come over on the Mayflower, they must have been prisoners or stow aways.
Bell rang, you can join the other far leftie's in recess.

I guess letterman can't say nice things about people, especially if they don't think like him, because it's not funny! His audience only laughs at his jokes when he dehumanizes decent people and their children! I hope all the real Americans stop watching him!!

Dave Letterman isn't funny. There's no longer freedom of speech. Liberals and Conservatives are not happy unless they're slinging dirt at each other and anyone else who won't agree with them. The Palins are definitely hypocrites. So called Christians without forgiveness. In the end everyone gets what they deserve.

Letterman only said the so call joke was about Bristol after the fact. Willow was the Palin child with them at the ballpark. Letterman should be taken to court for slander.
