She sees the last two stars
A heartbeat before dawn.
Instinctively,
She lifts a hand,
Splayed-fingered,
Reveals a forearm
Criss-crossed with flight trails
From a journey through darkness.
As coffee is clutched to sternum.
Knuckle to breast,
She breathes,
And knows that it is a blessing,
It is real,
And it will not be the last.
A heartbeat before dawn.
Instinctively,
She lifts a hand,
Splayed-fingered,
Reveals a forearm
Criss-crossed with flight trails
From a journey through darkness.
As coffee is clutched to sternum.
Knuckle to breast,
She breathes,
And knows that it is a blessing,
It is real,
And it will not be the last.
