Day of the Dead Wedding Ideas

The holiday known as the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de los Muertos or All Souls' Day, is typically celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries during the final days of October through the beginning of November. The actual calendar date for the festival is November 2. The holiday, steeped in tradition, is a joyful, vibrant celebration of life for those who commemorate it and elements and images of the Day of the Dead have become popular in today's culture. Not to take away from any of the religious or cultural meanings of the holiday, many couples draw inspiration from the colorful tradition when planning a wedding.

Day of the Dead Wedding Invitations
Dia de los Muertos wedding invitations are probably not going to be readily available at most print shops, although there are some on the market, like these from Etsy seller BonMoment. Couples may have to design their own or have custom invitations made. When selecting a design, go with bold, vibrant colors and images of sugar skulls to set the Day of the Dead mood. Black paper with white font would also be a good choice for invitations for this theme.

Day of the Dead Wedding Dresses and Bridesmaids Dresses
The bride could choose to wear a traditional white bridal gown or she could look for a unique black or red wedding dress. If wearing a white or black gown, a bouquet of red roses would be beautiful. Darker colored flowers or a white floral bouquet would compliment a red wedding gown. Birdcage veils are very popular as alternatives to traditional wedding veils. Bridesmaids could wear red or black bridesmaid's dresses, the opposite of whichever color the bride is wearing. As the celebration is full of vivid colors, bridesmaids could also wear a different color dress, such as orange or purple.

Day of the Dead Wedding Venue and Decorations
A cemetery with a chapel available for rentals would be a perfect setting for a wedding of this theme. An outdoor ceremony at another location would also be appropriate for a mild weather Dia de los Muertos wedding. Ideas for decorating the venue include Mexican papel picado banners, floral wreaths, large arrangements of flowers, and plenty of candles or strands of small lights. Decorate the area with Mexican folk art or décor with a folk art flavor. Create a Dia de los Muertos altar with sugar skulls, flowers, votive candles, and figurines of skeleton brides and grooms. There are many tutorials and recipes for making edible sugar skulls, which could also double as wedding favors if wrapped in cellophane and tied with a nice ribbon.
