Unexpected surprises are the best, throughout my life these surprises are the ones that make a true difference and really sometimes grab my attention more than the expected for obvious reasons. Just the other day a family member introduced me to a little game called Counter Strike. With me using a PC more than anything else I decided to pickup the PC version instead of the Xbox version, and I'm glad I did. Not only did the box come with Counter strike but it came with the fringe benefit of the game Day of Defeat, this game like mentioned grabbed my attention and has not let go. Since the main game packaged here is Counter Strike the game Day of Defeat does not get the publicity that is due.

Day of Defeat is based in the WW2 era of American vs the Nazi's, or the U.S. Army vs The Warmecht. Everything about Day of Defeat is tailored to the WW2 era, sounds are so close they ring and even shell shock is common. Sniper rifle crack the air and Thompson machine guns drum roll through the streets. While the sounds are a highlight, a game they do not make. The gameplay is classic FPS from the Half Life 2 engine, and because of this Day of Defeat runs on any modest Computer, no super beasts needed.

The object of Day of Defeat is the classic capture the flag scenario, only the flags do not move. You must move around securing key positions to win the game, much like securing key points in real war. Some flags require 2 players to claim while other can be claimed by your lonesome. The only way to win a game though is by having good team, and since this game plays online you must not only be good fast, and willing to die for your team, you must have a good head on your shoulders.

Drop your ball for a second and your corpse will end up at the bottom of a shallow grave, at last until your respawn. Of course along with online play there will be many players better than you and they seem to be doing unrealistic damage, they may be cheating but that is simply solved by finding a goo server to join that has a strong stance against cheating, once this is done you will gain respect and cheating will no longer be as much of an issue.

Everything in this game from the visuals, sounds, and gameplay can sometimes make you feel numb, but don't worry your not the only one. With its dirty visuals, that add to the game and make it really shine, to its silence to ear splitting cracks and the rumble of grenades will make you crave more. Buyer beware this game is addicting and after some time within its grasp you may need to find reasons to pry yourself away, other than that everyone should enjoy this game if they like the Half Life 2 engine or any FPS games. Day of Defeat is a shining star in a more or less bland world of remakes, the options and tactics used by your enemies will make you a better player in all aspects. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy today, with tons of servers and tons of players Day of Defeat is anything but short of action.
