Day Labor - Times are tough now days with unemployment rates dipping further and further. Making ends meet is sometimes next to impossible and one begins to feel as if they are robbing Peter to pay Paul. There are two things in this world that there never seems to be enough of, time and money. When you don't have much of either one then you have to be creative to find quick ways to make some fast cash.

Day labor may be just the answer to your cash flow issues. With day labor, there is no long-term commitment. If you have a free day, a weekend, or even a few hours available you can go to any day labor center, or work for hire establishment and put your name down on a list. Contractors, landscapers, homeowners, small business owners, factory employers and such go to day labor centers looking for workers for various types of extra help they may need. Some may be just for the day or a few hours, others can extend out but you are not committed to any amount of time other then the hours you have agreed to work. There are possibilities for some day labor jobs to turn into fulltime positions if your work ethics are good and the timing is right.

It is common to be paid in cash for your hours worked. An employer is not required to give out W-2s or 1099s unless the worker has made over $600.00 dollars with them. This makes this type of situation favorable for the employer because they do not have to pay any benefits, e.g., Insurance, workers compensation, etc.

Day labor does have its drawbacks though too. Day labor centers are generally only in bigger cities. If you are not located in a big city you may want to put an ad in your local paper offering your service for things you are capable of doing. Many people who have used day labor for extra cash for urgent bills or holiday expenses have been shortchanged their wages from employers as well as have been stiffed totally on their wages. Another problem that ensues with Day labor is work injury. Employers feel they are not responsible for worksite injuries with day labors therefore do not cover any medical expense of any injuries you may incur upon working for them. Often times some employers' take advantage of workers tough position financially and pay low wages and the job quality may be very poor.

Quick money is great and day labor is one way of getting fast money but it is important to be wise. Ask around who is a worthy regular employer to work for at the agency. They can tell you who are not as honest and generally, they will avoid them, however, occasionally one will get past them. One thing to keep in mind as well as when dealing with Day labor is do not allow your need of making extra money override your logic and agree to work for an employer who may not necessarily have your best interest at heart. When asked to do transportation jobs, make sure you know what your transporting first. If the employer refuses to make that information public to you, it is wise not take that job. Day labor can work for you, if you use common sense. Many have been able to make money fast and take care of those urgent financially matters through day labor.
