Daylight savings time has a long history and it has been put into use on and off since 1918. In 1883 standard time zones was instituted in the US and Canada by the railroads but it was not put into law until 1918. Daylight Savings Time was included in that law of 1918, but appealed the next year and stopped. The time zones remained in the law.
It was put back into law in February 1942 and remained a law until September of 1945. After this time the individual states decided if they would use Daylight Savings Time or not. Some of the states did and some did not.
The Uniform act of 1966 provided standard dates for the beginning and ending of Daylight Savings Time with in the year's calendar. At this time it was to begin the on the last Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October. It allowed state government exemptions from this.
Then came the "energy crisis" years of the 70's and in 1974 Daylight Savings Time began on January 6 and in 1975, it's start date was February 23. After those two years it reverted back to the last Sunday in April.
In 1986 a law was passed that shifted the start date once again and starting in 1987 Daylight Savings Time started on the first Sunday in April.
The Energy Policy of 2005 changed the dates to what they are now.

Post a CommentI still think that they should abolish daylight savings time and save all that money in having to change timetables etc. If the school times need to change with the seasons, just change the time. Ditto if the farmers need to get up earlier, let them reset their alarm clocks. It seems madness when you think of everything that has to be done to compensate for countries changing their clocks.
Hey thank you! that was very helpful.
I hate DST, such a pain in the neck!
