Day Three with No Caffeine! What it's Like to Give up Caffeine

Amber Domke
Today is the start of day three with no caffeine for me. For some of you this probably isn't a big deal. I know several people who could easily give it up or already have and are completely fine without it. I however, love coffee and I'm a huge diet coke addict. As soon as I get out of the shower in the morning the first thing I must have is that cup of coffee. I usually have two cups in the morning and maybe more throughout the day depending on my day. Now that it's finally a bit cooler outside it's pretty easy to drink it all day long.

We're all busy and I'm sure many people are up late just as I am. That coffee in the morning is what gets me going. I always feel like I can function after that first cup. I just have the second one because I love the taste so much. Once I get my kids ready and off to school I come home and have a pop tart and a diet coke for breakfast pretty much every morning. It's hard to say how many diet drinks I might have throughout the day. It just depends really on where I'm at and what I'm doing. We all know that fountain cokes are much better then the ones from a can so if I'm out I'll pick up a drink a lot of times.

I had absolutely no intention of ever giving up caffeine. Never even thought about it. I felt it was what kept me going day in and day out. Well, recently I started having a small issue with my heart and the way it beats. After seeing a Dr. at Urgent Care last week and being told to lay off the caffeine I did so for a day or two then went right back to it. Then on Monday morning I saw my primary care physician and I was told cut out the caffeine completely starting now. So I did. I sent my husband to the store that evening to pick up some decaf coffee, that he won't even drink and began my journey into a caffeine free life.

Day one was horrible. I kept wanting to drink a pop. The only thing we had was Diet Mountain Dew and I knew that was a no go so I resorted to water. I'm not a huge fan of water, but it didn't end up being too bad. I found that I had a horrible headache most of the day, but I wasn't sure if it was due to something else or if I was just imagining it. I'm pretty sure as much as it hurt I wasn't, but who knows. Day two wasn't bad at all. I was able to drink my decaf coffee and still enjoy my coffee and I did have a caffeine free diet coke so I didn't have to completely give up my favorite things. I felt great all morning and much of the afternoon. At about three o'clock I was done though. I was so tired and wasn't sure I was going to make it home. I was sitting in the car driving wondering if it would be horrible of me to run through Starbucks. I didn't though! So I made it through day two with no headache and just being a little sleepy later in the day. So here we are on day three and it isn't going as well as yesterday. I have a slight headache which isn't too bad yet, but I'm dragging. I could easily crawl back into bed and sleep until I have to go pick up my daughter from school. I'm hoping this doesn't last all day and I'm sure as the days go by it will continue to get easier and easier. Besides my health is a bit more important then a nice big cup of caffeinated coffee, no matter how good it is!
