At Least Five Things to Do on a Day Trip to Nantucket Without Going to a Beach

Pat Clarke
There are at least five things to do on a day trip to the beautiful island of Nantucket. Other than basking on the miles of beaches, this is a great place to spend a day walking and shopping and exploring the Island of Nantucket. Everything is within walking distance, so there is no need to bring or worry about a car for this trip.

Begin the day by taking a ferry from Hyannis, Massachusetts. The ride on one of the fast ferries is just under an hour and gives you the feeling of actually going away on vacation. The ferry is air-conditioned and has outside decks. Once you get within a mile of Nantucket you should go out on the deck and enjoy the beautiful view Nantucket Sound. From your viewpoint to the right you will see Brant Point Lighthouse and Jetties Beach and on the left will be all of the beautiful piers and yachts docked at the piers.

If you dock around lunch time be sure to go to Slip 14 on Old South Wharf for a nice lunch on the pier. The restaurant is surrounded by little shops and artistic stores and enjoyable any time of the day. Of course, the nights become a little louder and more fun. Also, if you want a restaurant that is a little more formal, go to the Club Car on Main Street for a memorable drink or meal.

While on lower Main you can spend some time in the Nantucket Whaling Museum on 13 Broad Street where you can enjoy the history of Nantucket and see some of the most beautiful handmade Nantucket Lightship Baskets.

Walk the cobblestone streets of Main Street and be sure to visit some of the mainstay clothing stores such as Murray's Toggery Shop and Vis-a-Vis and the Zero Main. You can spend hours shopping and sitting on the benches just people watching. You never know who you might see on the streets of Nantucket and the dogs are normally friendly and beautiful.

Finally, turn down India Street but make sure it is before 3:00 in the afternoon. The Hospital Thrift Shop at 17 India Street usually closes early, but it is worth the stop. Three stories of collectibles and oddities from clothing to furniture await you at this shop.- This seems to be one place everyone enjoys for it's variety of items and inexpensive prices.

Rest assured you will be exhausted and ready to put your feet up for the return trip back to the mainland. Enjoy.
